Year 9 Community Project - What's the Buzz About Market Days?

Market Days are not just about indulging in delicious snacks and refreshing drinks; they are a chance for students to showcase their entrepreneurial skills while supporting causes that are close to their hearts. These events will transform our Art Plaza into a vibrant marketplace where students can savour a wide variety of homemade treats and beverages.

Supporting Important Causes

What makes these Market Days even more special is that every purchase contributes directly to the causes our Year 9 students are passionate about. Some of the causes they are supporting include:

  • Cancer Council: Funds raised will go towards vital research, patient support services, and education programs aimed at preventing and curing cancer.
  • Salvation Army: Supporting the Salvation Army helps provide hope, help, and comfort to those in need, including individuals and families facing hardship.
  • RSPCA: Funds raised for the RSPCA support the welfare of animals by providing shelter, care, and advocacy for their rights and well-being.
  • Mental Health for Young People: Our students are passionate about raising awareness and funds for mental health initiatives that support the well-being of young people, fostering a mentally healthy community.
  • Helping People with Learning Disabilities in Our School: Our students are dedicated to enhancing the support for fellow students with learning disabilities right here in our school community.
  • The UN Migration: Contributing to the UN Migration Agency supports efforts to aid migrants, refugees, and displaced people, promoting safe and orderly migration worldwide.
  • Lost Dogs Home: Funds raised for Lost Dogs Home help reunite lost pets with their families and provide care for homeless animals.
  • The Visual Snow Initiative: This cause focuses on raising awareness and funds for research into visual snow syndrome, a neurological condition affecting vision.
  • Ozzie Harvest: Supporting Ozzie Harvest means reducing food waste and helping distribute surplus food to those in need.
  • Concussion Legacy Foundation: Our students are passionate about raising awareness of the long-term effects of concussions in sports and supporting research in this area.

These are just a few of the causes our students are championing. Purchases made by students at lunchtime on 6th and 13th of September will go a long way in helping them achieve their goals and create positive change in our community.

L-Plates for Year 6 German students

During a pastoral care session in week 6 the Year level’s German teachers awarded a large number of students with their L-Plate certificates.

Whilst these certificates do not qualify our students to drive the family car, they attest that they have shown competence and confidence to independently communicate in German.

In order to qualify for the certificate which is issued by the AGTV (Australian German Teachers’ Association of Australia), Year 6 students had to provide evidence of their ability to

  • greet people
  • share information about themselves
  • express opinions

as well as have a good knowledge about

  • the pronunciation and spelling of German
  • where German is spoken
  • what GNLC’s connection to German is.

Our students also shared how they learn German best.
