Principal's Report
Each year the Department of Education ask students in Year 4 to Year 12 to complete an anonymous student survey about a number of topics. During the pandemic and since, this has included questions about Wellbeing.
A number of these question help build an understanding of the things that students are attending to in their lives and their perceptions.
In 2023, 41% of our students reported having low resilience compared to 37% in 2022 and 27% in 2022. This is an increase of 14% since 2022.
While a lot of time, energy and resourcing is placed on our programs for academic growth, this data also tells us that the personal growth elements are just as important. We will discuss this data with staff and evaluate our current personal, social and emotional programs that are in place.
Resilience is not something that can be simple taught through a program at school, and it requires experiences as well. While our perceptions of the students are limited to the time we see them, I am surprised at this statistic, however the purpose of the survey is to see through the students’ eyes and act on these responses.
Other interesting responses were –
72% of students participated in organised sport in the two weeks prior to the survey
79% of students participated in a hobby or interest area with others in the two weeks prior to the survey
53% of students stated that they spent 1-5 hours online on weekdays
44% of students stated that they spend 5 or more hours online on the weekend
70% of students see their physical health as either good or excellent
