Year 1 News
Inquiry
The children have commenced their new Unit of Inquiry for Term 3. For the remainder of the term the Year One children will be exploring how ‘Food goes through many stages of production before reaching us’.
Last week the children were introduced to the central idea and were able to successfully break down its meaning, pondering what “stages of production” actually means in relation to food. The children were then asked to determine questions that they would like to explore throughout the unit. We created a Wonder Wall of our questions, and the teachers will now use these to guide our learning and investigations during the unit.
Students Taking Action
It was great to see Xavier D take action as part of our new Unit of Inquiry, How We Organise Ourselves. We have been learning about how food goes through many stages of production before reaching us and the importance of looking at our food labels. Whilst out for breakfast Xavier found the Australia made, from 100% Australian ingredients label on his sisters' juice bottle. He enjoyed sharing this with our class.
Well done Xavier!
Ally L also took action at home and put together a very impressive Power Point about food. She shared this with the class and spoke about processed and unprocessed food, different colours that foods can be, the food chain and where different types of foods are grown and come from. We were so impressed with how knowledgeable Ally was and how confidently she spoke.
Well done Ally!
Measurement and Capacity
Over the next couple of weeks, the Year One students will be learning about Measurement and Capacity. We have been discussing when and where we use measurement and making strong connections to the use of measurement in their everyday lives.
Last week the students spent time outside the classroom, experimenting with a range of different common household containers and applying their new knowledge to estimate, calculate and compare their capacities. This unit is always a particular favourite of the Grade 1’s as it comprises many engaging, hands-on activities and opportunities to work with their peers to problem solve.
Literacy – Writing
The students have been looking at ways to improve their writing skills by adding more detail. This week they worked on stretching their sentences using the five W’s, Who, What, When, Where & Why. They enjoyed asking each other the question ‘Tell me More’ to find out the answers to these questions and then wrote some very interesting and detailed sentences.
