Did you know that certain saints are Doctors of the Church?

In Roman Catholicism, there are 36 saints whose doctrinal writings have special authority. They are given the title Doctor of the Church and the writings and teachings of the various doctors of the church are of particular importance to Roman Catholic theology.

Two Doctors of the Church are house patrons at St. Peter’s College: St. Augustine and St. Theresa of Avila.

St. Augustine is a particularly interesting saint: in his youth he was quite immoral and prone to drunken behaviour. Today, he is the patron saint of Brewers.

Catholic On-line says that Augustine, “spent many years of his life in wicked living and in false beliefs. Though he was one of the most intelligent men who ever lived and though he had been brought up a Christian, his sins of impurity and his pride darkened his mind so much, that he could not see or understand the Divine Truth anymore.”

However, Augustine’s mother, St. Monica continually prayed for Augustine and, once again from Catholic On-line, “through the prayers of his holy mother and the marvellous preaching of St. Ambrose, Augustine finally became convinced that Christianity was the one true religion.”

Augustine was also a philosopher. He especially studied the philosophies of the great Greek philosophers, Aristotle, and Plato. He authored many books: Confessions and City of God are two of his most influential writings. These books contain some of the important teachings of the Catholic Church.

The example of St. Augustine shows that it is possible to lift oneself to much higher spheres of behaviour and spirituality.

The motto of Augustine House: The world is our Classroom encapsulates the teaching and learning philosophy of St. Augustine of Hippo. His feast day is August 28th, the traditional date of his death.

St. Peter,                                         St. Augustine

JUNIOR BOYS FOOTY 2023 - Last Match of the Season and Season Wrap

The junior boys had their final game for the season against Hillcrest last Thursday. We were severely undermanned. Every player we have who is taller than 160 cm was out injured or sick, except for Caleb G. Hillcrest were a team of very large lads, and they had a lot of players on their bench - that makes all the difference at this level. However, our boys really stepped up. In the absence of our captain, and ten or so other players, we were always going to struggle. And we did end up getting beaten by 60 points, but the boys were amazing. It was one of my favourite games of the season to watch. Boys who haven’t had the opportunity to play in key positions got their chance at last.

Ryder Borthwick was unreal - some of his marks were fantastic. Hudson Sinclair showed that he can definitely play at this level. He may not have had his kicking boots on, but he got plenty of the ball and made life difficult for the Hillcrest defenders. Caleb did not enjoy getting beaten, but he still did the work of ten men, despite getting tackled ferociously by the Hillcrest giants. Drew McNeil is always brave, but he worked incredibly hard to keep getting the ball moving forward too. Harvey, Tate and Talon ran a lot and tackled hard and Emmett copped a fair bit of attention from the Hillcrest boys, who didn’t like the amount that he was getting the ball. A special mention to Lachy D, whose arm I had to twist a little bit to play; he did very well chasing and tackling and staying with his opponent as much as he could. Lachy has shown great improvement in his understanding of the game. It was great to see Patrick M’s attack on the ball, Chevy showed some real skill and Roc was very tough, considering how much bigger his opponents were.

The junior boys did well overall this season. Hopefully, next year all of the boys will try out again for either the 9/10 team or the 7/8 team. It will make a huge difference to have virtually all Year 8’s in the team next year, they will be very hard to beat.

Thank you to Mr De Goldi for helping out, and to Tyler Hogg, Seb Sottile and Noah Sproull for your enthusiasm and assistance on match days.

Good luck with your finals and grand finals this weekend.
