Congratulations Mr Walsh!

Congratulations to Mitch and Sophie from the entire Scotsburn community on the arrival of their beautiful daughter, Honey Wren. By all reports, everyone is doing well and we can’t wait to meet her!

A massive thank you to our parent community for the donation of gifts for Mitch and Soph. I have a massive bag of goodies to deliver, which I am sure they will greatly appreciate!

Welcome to Mrs Cooper

With Mr Walsh now taking a period of leave, we welcome Karly Cooper into SC2 for the remainder of Term 3. Mrs Cooper is a familiar face to our students at Scotsburn and has taught some CRT days in the past. We are very lucky to have Mr Cooper step into Mrs Walsh’s shoes, and we know SC2 are in very capable hands.

Any parents who are around at drop off or pick up time, make sure to pop in and say gday!

Grade 3/4 Cave Hill Creek Camp

See some reflections below from last week’s camp at Cave Hill Creek:

My favourite camp experience…

Leah - I liked the food because it was yummy.

William L - I loved camp because we got to do canoeing and map reading.

Amity - My favourite thing about camp was archery because they taught you how to improve your skills.

Annie - I loved sleeping at camp because I was worn out from all of the activities!

Flynn - I liked hut building because you could work as a team.

Scotsburn Fathers’ Day Stall - THIS WEDNESDAY at SCOTSBURN

Our annual Father’s Day stall will be held THIS Wednesday 30th August.

This is an opportunity for our students to learn more about gratitude and give thanks to the dads and male role models in their lives. All gifts will be $5.

Students are offered the opportunity to come along and purchase one gift for their dad or significant male in their life. After all grades have been through, an announcement will be put over for any students who may wish to buy a second gift (for a step dad, grandfather, etc.) to come and purchase another item.

We will run the stall in the shed, first thing in the morning. Any parents who would like to pop in and volunteer some help at the stall, we would love to see you.

150 Year Celebrations this Friday at Buninyong

As we know, this Friday we have our big Buninyong Primary School 150 year celebration at the Buninyong campus. Please be sure to have a good read of Compass messages as well as other sections of this newsletter to be all over what is happening for the day - there is quite a lot!

Below are a few Scotsburn-specific notes to be aware of:

Start and Finish of the day

As per usual with a Buninyong day, we will meet in the courtyard from 8:45am. Hopefully we will have a staff member there slightly earlier, however with lots of setting up and organisation to do, we can’t guarantee anyone before 8:45am. We will finish the day at 3:30pm in the courtyard.

Activities throughout the day

After the assembly in the gym, students will be participating in activities planned within their year levels across the day. Some of these may be specific to celebrating the 150 year occasion.

Parking

A reminder that due to the size of the event, there will be limited parking available around the school, particularly in the morning. If you are struggling for a park, the school is running a shuttle bus from the Buninyong Football Oval on Forest Street.

Dress Up

The dress up theme for the day is to celebrate the school throughout the decades. Scotsburn classes have decided to dress up as students from an era prior to the 2000s. Hopefully lots of families have some bits and pieces they can put together from home. Please note that this day is not aimed to be a free dress up day, rather to represent the types of clothing worn across the decades in the past.

If you have already purchased a costume, please don’t feel the need to change this.

Book Week

A huge thank you to all our students who participated with enthusiasm in the Book Week activities during last week. A big thank you to the families who donated multiple books for our Book Swap Bonanza. During recess  students were treated to lots of fun activities as well as a special visit by Chris and Gerty. The Buninyong Book Swap Bonanza was great and all students were excited to look through the many books that were donated and choose that special book to take home. A huge thank you to all families for your involvement. We look forward to next year's Book Week!

Melbourne Renegades Visit to the Campus

Students had a fantastic time last week when the women’s cricket team the Melbourne Renegades came for a visit. Students had the opportunity to participate in some small group activities that focussed on ball skills. There was also time for some questions and players signed a ball for each student. Keep your eye out in the Ballarat Courier for some more photos!

Parent Volunteering and Assistance

Thanks to those who have volunteered their assistance for our various programs and activities, below are our helpers for this week.

SC1 Vintage Cars and Community Walk

On Wednesday 6th September (Week 9) students from SC1 will need to be dropped at the Buninyong Campus in the morning, meeting in the courtyard at 8:45am. We will be participating in our Community Walk - which had been postponed early in the term. After recess we will be participating in a vintage cars incursion which is also part of our Then and Now Integrated Studies topic. Students will be bused back at 12.30pm and will be dismissed from the Scotsburn Campus at the end of the day as normal. If you have any questions, please see Ana or Kirsty.

SC1 Learning Snapshot

SC1 were very busy last week! Our chairs finally decided to let us sit on them after some very good persuasive letters were written by the class, persuading the chairs to come back and putting forward some very good opinions as to why they should.

In Reading, we have been working on visualising. This is a form of reading comprehension strategy used to create pictures in our minds when reading. This worked brilliantly with Book Week. We explored some fantastic books throughout the week.

In Maths, we have been learning about fractions. Last week we focused on fractions of a whole, and this week we will look at fractions of a collection.

Have a fantastic week.

Thanks,

Ana and Kirsty.

SC3 Learning Snapshot

The crime scene is SC3 was finally revealed, with Mr Morgan and Mrs Morgan being the culprits! Who would have thought that they would be so sneaky! The students did an awesome job using their inferencing skills to create news reports about the scene.

In Maths, we have begun our workshops focusing on decimals and percentages and linking them back to fractions. We have also been putting our final touches on our projected profits as part of the Shark Tank project.

It was wonderful to see SC3 students engage so well in book week

last week and support the younger students. The book swap was again a massive highlight!

Another reminder that the Compass event for final payment for our Melbourne Camp in Week 2 of Term 4 is now open. Please let me know if you are having any trouble with the process on Compass.

Have another brilliant week,

Jarrod

Specialist Learning Snapshot

SC1 have been looking at the shapes and details needed to create all kinds of imaginative robots this term. Last week’s gelli printing with lego pieces was a real hit!

You can find lots of recipes for home-made gelli plates on youtube if your child would love to continue to explore this medium. Alternatively, they can be purchased ready-made at Zart Art and would be an awesome Christmas gift!

SC2 landscapes:

Inspired by indigenous artists Bronwyn Bancroft and Sally Morgan, SC2 have been working hard on some beautiful abstract depictions of Buninyong landscapes. For the skies we have used a sgraffito method, whilst for the middle and foreground we have explored pattern through gelli printing and selected our favourite patterns and textures to represent each section of the land and water. They are looking so beautiful and should be completed this week or next!

SC3: Fairy houses

SC3 have been putting a lot of effort into planning a fairy house and have begun the early construction stages of these sculptures. Recycled jars and bottles are forming the internal structures, and we are forming further detail using aluminium foil and cardboard. Soon we will add paper mache pulp and air drying clay, and will decorate them early next term. We are super excited about how they will progress!

Scotsburn Intercampus Travel

At times, Scotsburn students will be transported between campuses in order to attend classes, assemblies, special days and events. On most occasions, transport required through the day will be by bus and occasionally private car for smaller groups of students. Parents may be asked to drop off or collect from the Buninyong campus if sessions are at the beginning or ending of a day.

We will always let you know of any upcoming travel arrangements via our newsletter, Compass, or via phone for smaller, more specific travel arrangements.

If you ever have any questions or concerns regarding intercampus travel, please contact your child’s teacher.
