Vinnies Noble Park Education Program

Hello Families and Noble Park Community,

I have some exciting news to share! Harley has been shortlisted for the Outstanding Primary Student award CMY 2023. Being on the shortlist is an incredible achievement, and recognition of all of the hard work happening at our club. Harley together with his family, my colleagues and myself will attend the awards ceremony on Wednesday 13th September at the State Library of Victoria.

Harley was given the task of presenting at a ‘press conference’ to his peers on how he goes about preparing for tests, handling the stress that comes with it and how he deals with overcoming setbacks. This was a great time for Harley to reflect on what he already does great and a chance for his peers to learn and take away some great approaches to challenging situations.

Here are his keynotes:

What has been a significant setback during a previous test?

One time I went and did a test but a setback was that I didn’t do spelling well so it made me feel really sad. What I did after was, I ignored what I did wrong and focussed on what I did right. Later I revisited my spelling to practice and improve.

Describe a time you have learned from your mistakes, sought guidance and applied it.

One time at Taekwondo I hurt myself because I used the wrong form and I asked my Master to help me learn the proper way. When I got better at the form it made me feel very happy and not scared anymore like I can do anything.

Explain what strategies you use to prepare for a test and what coping strategies you have when dealing with stress.

I try to breathe in and out and only think about what could go right. When I deal with stress I talk to my mum about it. It helps me to talk to my mum and let it all out and speaking with someone I trust helps me.

Can you remember a time during your academics that helped you achieve your goal? What happen and how?

When I joined Taekwondo, they taught me breathing strategies which helped me cope with Naplan. A way it helps me is that when I breathe it makes me feel way calmer and I can catch my breath. When I catch my breath, it helps me have a growth mindset and think more clearly.

If you see your friends struggling socially or academically what strategies can use or put in place to help them?

I talk to them and try to calm them by sharing something funny as well as making them feel safe by helping them breathe. When I help them breathe they will calm down and be able to talk to me. When I talk to them I will talk to them about something they are interested in then ask them some questions about what they are going through and how can I help.

Thank you to everyone for your ongoing support of our Vinnies Noble Park Education program. Its amazing to be a part of community that supports and uplifts kids.

Kind regards,

Anthony
