Year One

Place Value in Year One!

This term, as mathematicians we have been exploring the foundations of place value. We have been learning to count collections efficiently by grouping in tens, to develop skills and understandings to support the development of place value knowledge.

Students have been discovering the power of grouping strategies to enhance their counting accuracy and efficiency. By recognising that numbers can be organised in groups of ten, they are learning to count collections more effectively and build confidence in their understanding of place value.

Our students have been working hard to using a range of manipulatives, including unifix blocks, bundling sticks and tens frames. They are learning to:

  • Group items to count more accurately and efficiently

  • Recognise and create groups of ten

  • Count in units of ten

  • Understand that 10 ones combine to make 1 ten

As we move further into the unit, we will begin to make, name and record numbers to consolidate 2-digit place value. We encourage families to support this learning at home by practicing grouping in tens, playing counting games, and encouraging children to group objects in everyday activities.
