Storytelling Around the World

This term, we dive into the art of storytelling, exploring its rich traditions, meanings, and techniques across cultures.

Storytelling in China

Last week, the students brought an ancient legend to life through the vibrant and energetic Dragon Dance, a key tradition of Chinese New Year. They learned how the dragon, a symbol of strength, wisdom, and good fortune, was believed to bring rain and prosperity to the land. To honor this legend, people began performing the Dragon Dance each year to welcome luck and drive away misfortune.

Using flowing waves, sharp jumps, and spinning circles, students worked in teams to recreate the dragon’s movements, learning how rhythm, teamwork, and storytelling combine to make the dance come alive. Accompanied by drums and cymbals, they took turns leading their own dragon through dynamic sequences, celebrating the energy and unity of this special tradition.

Storytelling in Germany

This week, we explored the traditional Bavarian Schuhplattler dance, which dates to over 1000 years ago, when a hunter acted out his chase through the forest. With stomping feet, clapping hands, and thigh-slapping beats, his friends joined in, turning the story into a lively dance that has been passed down for generations.

Our students embraced the challenge, using movement to express nature, hunting, and village life. In pairs or small groups, they learned and created rhythmic sequences, exaggerating each stomp and slap to make their storytelling come alive. By the end, they had not only learned a new dance but also discovered how traditions and stories can be preserved through movement and shared with others—just as they have been for centuries!

Luca from 6AM Leads the Way!

Luca was an absolute star during our Schuhplattler lesson, mastering the rhythmic stomps, claps, and thigh slaps with incredible enthusiasm. His standout performance didn’t go unnoticed—he was invited to assist with one of our junior classes, where he helped guide younger students through the dance with patience and skill. His leadership and encouragement made a huge impact, showing how storytelling through movement can bring people together. Well done, Luca! ⭐

Keep up the great work everyone!
