Autism Awareness-Week 11

CELEBRATING AUTISM AWARENESS AND ACCEPTANCE AT PEAKHURST PUBLIC SCHOOL
The 2nd of April was World Autism Day. It is an internationally recognised day annually encouraging Member States of the United Nations to take measures to raise awareness about autistic individuals throughout the world. Here at Peakhurst Public School, we are dedicated to fostering a supportive environment where every student feels valued, understood and included regardless of their differences.
In Week 11 we will be celebrating and raising awareness about autism and learning ways to support better health and wellbeing for those with autism in our school. This is a whole school initiative that all classes will be participating in. There are several activities planned. These include:
- Class teachers will give an immersive class lesson that explores how students with autism experience their classrooms, where sensory processing and focus can be challenging
- The ‘Book a Buddy’ initiative where students from mainstream classes can join a lesson in a support class. This will be an opportunity to demonstrate leadership, support and friendship
- In the library, Mr McLeod will read a range of literature in shared reading time that have autism themes
- Lastly, there will be a mufti day on Tuesday 8th April. Students and staff are encouraged to wear as many bright colours as they can, in one outfit.
We hope that the whole school community embraces this initiative and that it encourages ongoing understanding and valuing of self and others in our school.
