OHS COMMITTEE

OHS Committee Purpose: The OHS Committee is a formal group that facilitates consultation on health and safety matters. The committee is responsible for supporting the resolution of safety issues.

The OHS Committee provides a forum for discussing health and safety concerns.

SPILL KIT- SPILL BUCKET

Purpose

The Spill Bucket Kit contains essential items to manage and clean biological hazards (e.g., vomit, blood, bodily fluids) safely. All staff must follow the correct procedures to ensure a hygienic and safe environment for students and staff.

Staff Responsibility

As Teachers: Part of Dimension 6 – Professional Practice (6.4 and 6.6), all staff are expected to maintain a safe and orderly environment, including responding to biological hazards.

 

As ES staff: 

Dimensions of Work: 

  • Duties include routine tasks such as:(iii) Provide basic physical care and wellbeing support for students such as toileting, meals, and lifting.

     

  • Provide medical intervention support to a student/s: (i) The student/s has a specific medical condition that requires assistance, this includes cleaning the sudent and the biological hazard; (ii) The support relates to a specific medical condition identified by the Employer under relevant policy 

Spill Bucket Kit Contents

Each kit includes:

✅ Disposable gloves (latex-free)

✅ Absorbent kitty litter

✅ Paper towels

✅ Plastic bags

✅ Detergent

✅ PPE (goggles, apron)

 

All of these items need to be readily available. Each classroom is responsible for ensuring any missing items are replenished as needed.

 

Please ensure you have a spill kit and these items are in the kit. If you need any help, please see Frances or Mary.

Step-by-Step Response to a Biological Hazard

1. Contain the Area

🔹 Guide students and staff away from the affected area.

🔹 If it is in an outdoor area or walkway, please advise the emergency line that an area is                unavailable.

🔹If inside on a carpeted area, please let Denise or Frances know as they will advise you         

       with specific instructions. 

2. Put on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

🔹 Wear gloves, goggles, mask and apron before handling the spill.

3. Absorb and Remove the Spill

🔹 Sprinkle absorbent kitty litter over the spill.

🔹 Collect waste and dispose of it in a doubled plastic bag.

4. Disinfect the Surface

🔹 Use disinfectant (all purpose cleaner) to clean area.

🔹 Dispose of paper towels in a doubled plastic bag.

🔹Remove gloves and PPE carefully to avoid cross-contamination.

🔹Dispose of all gloves and PPE in a doubled plastic bag.

5. Dispose of Contaminated Materials

🔹 Seal the doubled plastic bag and dispose of it in the large waste bin.

6. Wash Hands and Sanitise

🔹 Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water. 

🔹 Sanitise hands

 

7. Report the Incident

🔹 Notify your sub-school leader and relevant staff (First Aider or Facilities Team).

🔹 Complete an incident report and/or first aid report if required.

🔹Please notify parents in the student's communication book.

 

 

FIRST AID

             FIRST AID AND CPR TRAINING:                               12th March 2025 @3.30pm                  

The annual First Aid Training & CPR Training is booked for Wednesday 12th March at 3.30pm. The training will be a blended program, with online modules to be completed prior to the face to face training.  The face to face training will commence at 3.30pm and will begin with CPR training. Once the staff that are only required to complete CPR finish (approx 4.30pm), they will be dismissed and the remaining staff will complete the Level 2 First Aid Training.  This is expected to finish approx 5.30pm

 

If you have updated your qualification outside of JSA and have not yet provided me with your certificate, please email me a copy so you can be added to the 2025 First Aid Officer List.

 

If you have not provided me with your USI number, please email to me asap if you will be undertaking the training. 

 

Once the First Aid Training organisation has the confirmed staff that will be attending, you will receive access to the online module.

An OHS Safety Champion is someone who actively promotes and supports workplace health and safety by identifying risks, encouraging safe practices, and fostering a culture of safety.
