Principal's Report

Dear Parents/Guardians and friends of Nazareth

Please find following the speech that I delivered at yesterday's Opening Mass, celebrating our 40 year anniversary.  It was a wonderful celebration attended by many:

Today is a significant day as we stop and celebrate the wonderful milestone which is ‘40 Years of Nazareth’.  Coincidentally, it is symbolic that today falls during Catholic Education Week. The theme for Education Week is:

‘Arise, shine for your light has come and the Glory of the Lord has risen upon you’

On reflection this quote can be directly linked to Nazareth College.

The College was built – it arose.  The students, families and staff have come and continued to be educated and shine, in Faith, Wisdom and Knowledge.

Today the entire school has travelled to St Patrick’s Cathedral to celebrate this significant event.  The heart of Catholic worship in the Archdiocese of Melbourne.

How have we continued to shine?  Historically, in excess of 24,000 students have been educated at Nazareth College, together with their retrospective families.  Three past students have been ordained as priests:

  • Fr Cameron Smith (celebrating with us today)
  • Fr Nathan Rawlins (currently studying in the Philippines)
  • Fr Paul Zaher (unable to be here today)

Many staff members have flourished from their commencement at Nazareth and have gone on to lead other Catholic communities:

  • Mr Terry Feeley (RIP) – Principal of St Peter’s
  • Mr Gerard Bain King – Principal of CBC / St Mary’s
  • Ms Mary Farah – Principal of St Aloysius
  • Ms Elizabeth Hanney – Principal of Sienna College
  • Mr Vin Fenney – Principal of St Francis Xavier
  • Mr Mark Murphy – Principal of Whitefriars
  • Mr Nicholas Scully – Principal of Kolbe College
  • Mr David Broadbent – Principal of Aquinas College

Nazareth has done something special over the years to have so many spiritual leaders go and make their mark.

The three previous Principals of Nazareth, Mr Paul D'Astoli, Dr Gregory Clarke and Mrs Anne McDonald, in many ways have shaped and guided many Nazarenes in their communities. All of them have made their mark and helped form many Nazarenes. We give thanks for this.

To all of our parishes – St Elizabeth’s, St Justin’s, St Gerard’s and St Simon’s together with our associated parishes – St Anthony’s, Resurrection, St John Vianney’s, St Joseph’s and St Mark's – your association with the College has assisted us to continue your great work in the initial years to help form students of Faith, Wisdom and Knowledge.

Today, we are a welcoming College, diverse and rich in nature and culture.  We celebrate and aspire to continue to grow under the guidance of the Holy Family of Nazareth.

We hope that we can be the future ‘Pilgrims of Hope’ and continue to be guided by the Holy Spirit in our quest to continue to improve and grow.

God Bless

Mr Sam Cosentino
