Year 3 News

No More Homework!
For the next two weeks during NAPLAN, we’ll be giving the year 3 students a break from set home activities. We’d still like the students to read a book to themselves, you or even the family pet.
Choosing Our Student Agency Team (SAT) Representatives
The year 3 classrooms at the end of week 4 were so silent that you could hear a pin drop! The kids worked extremely hard writing speeches to present to their classmates. Every student showed courage, confidence, and enthusiasm when they gave their speech to their class.
We all cast our vote for who we thought would best represent us to be our voice in decision-making matters. Congratulations to our Student Agency Team representatives: Hamish (3A), Emmerson (3B) and Joni (3C)!
Essential Agreement
Year 3 have brainstormed ideas on how they can best make 2025 a safe, fun and happy year. These ideas have been combined to create our Year 3 Essential Assessment.
3A discussed the question: What does positive behaviour look and sound like?
3B discussed the question: How can we be tolerant of others so that everyone feels safe and happy at school?
3C discussed the question: How should we interact with each other to create a harmonious learning community?
Afterward, we came together and formed our Essential Agreement for 2025 based on our ideas around these questions.
Our First Learning Task of the Year!
And just like that, we have already wrapped up our first unit of inquiry with our first learning task of the year. It was wonderful to see the kids immersed in writing about which book character they would invite over for a playdate.
We all learned a lot about making connections between our traits and experiences and a character’s traits and experiences. Great job to all the Year 3 students for their hard work!
Our New Unit of Inquiry
We have recently introduced our new Unit of Inquiry: How We Express Ourselves. Our central idea for this unit is “People express themselves differently according to environment and audience”. To get started, the Year 3 students were given a communication provocation.
Each table group was given a set of imperfect instructions. Students were tasked with following the instructions to complete the task, however, very little information was provided on most tasks. Once they finished the task, the students shared how the instructions were given in different ways and talked about how that affected communication and the outcome.
Let’s Add!
For the past couple of weeks, we have been focusing on addition in our mathematics sessions. The students have been enjoying challenging themselves with open-ended questions, playing maths games, and problem-solving on their mini whiteboards.
We have been learning how to add two- and three-digit numbers together using a variety of strategies including partitioning, split strategy and using an empty number line to leap, jump and hop.
Most recently we have started learning to add numbers together using the vertical addition strategy.
Preparing For NAPLAN
With NAPLAN coming up in Weeks 7 and 8, we have been preparing ourselves with daily NAPLAN literacy and numeracy practices. We enjoyed writing our ‘FOUND’ narratives, the students all exhibited creative thinking and came up with interesting stories ranging from finding hidden treasure, to making a new friend or finding courage.
We are very proud of how the Year 3 students are practicing their skills for NAPLAN.
Your preparation has been impressive, and we know you’ll do fantastic!
