The Power of Heggerty in Prep: Building Strong Foundations for Early Reading

As the first year of school begins, young students embark on an exciting journey of learning, discovery, and growth. One of the most important skills they’ll develop is the ability to read, and to support this foundational learning, our schools has integrated the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Program into our Prep curriculum.

What is Heggerty?

The Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Program is a research-based approach to developing early reading skills, specifically phonemic awareness, which is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words. It is a systematic and structured program designed to teach essential skills like rhyming, blending, segmenting, and isolating sounds—all critical components of becoming a confident reader.

In Prep, students engage in daily lessons using the Heggerty program, which typically takes just 10-15 minutes per session. These lessons are highly interactive, with students participating in activities such as clapping out syllables, identifying rhyming words, and practicing blending and segmenting sounds. The activities are engaging, designed to capture the attention of young learners and make learning feel like fun play.

The Benefits of Heggerty for Early Readers

  1. Strengthens Phonemic Awareness: Phonemic awareness is one of the most reliable predictors of reading success. Heggerty helps students become more aware of the sounds in words, which in turn supports their ability to decode and comprehend text as they progress in their reading journey.

  2. Boosts Reading Fluency: By consistently practicing phonemic awareness through the Heggerty program, students gain the skills necessary to sound out words quickly and accurately. This fluency is crucial as they begin to read more complex texts.

  3. Improves Spelling and Writing: Phonemic awareness isn't just about reading—it's also the foundation for writing. As students learn to segment and blend sounds, they are better able to spell words correctly and write with more confidence.

  4. Supports Listening Skills: The activities in the Heggerty program often involve students listening carefully to the sounds in words. This strengthens their overall listening skills, which are important not only for reading but for understanding instructions, following along in class, and communicating effectively.

  5. Engages Students: The hands-on, interactive nature of the Heggerty lessons keeps young students engaged and motivated to participate. This makes it easier for teachers to maintain focus and enthusiasm in the classroom while ensuring all students are actively learning.

  6. Builds Confidence in Young Readers: As students master essential phonemic skills, they gain confidence in their reading abilities. This sense of accomplishment motivates them to continue practicing and developing their skills, helping them build a lifelong love of reading.

Why is Heggerty Important for Prep Students?

In the first year of school, students are at a critical point in their literacy development. Early experiences with reading can set the stage for future academic success. The Heggerty program’s focus on phonemic awareness is a powerful tool in helping students make sense of the spoken and written word. By starting with these foundational skills, students are better prepared to tackle more complex literacy concepts in the years to come.

As Prep students continue to engage with the Heggerty program, they will not only gain essential skills for reading, writing, and spelling but will also develop the confidence and enthusiasm throughout their educational journey.

Incorporating Heggerty into Prep classrooms is just one of the many ways we are ensuring that all students have the support they need to succeed as readers. It’s an exciting time for our youngest learners, and we look forward to seeing their progress as they develop the literacy skills that will serve them for years to.

We hope you enjoy watching our prep students and Mrs Gibbon in action during one of their Heggerty sessions.
