Volunteer Child Safe Training - Term 1 Sessions

Dear Parents and Carers,

We greatly appreciate the valuable contributions of our volunteers in supporting our school community. As part of our commitment to child safety, all volunteers must complete annual Child Safe Training before working with students. This requirement applies to all volunteers, including those assisting in programs such as:

·         Afterschool Basketball (coaching/team management)

·         Art room support

·         School events (e.g., Cross Country, Athletics, excursions)

·         Other classroom or extracurricular activities

If you are considering volunteering in any capacity, please ensure your training is up to date. If you are unsure of your current training status, please check with the staff member who has invited you to support the program or event.

Additionally, if you volunteer at another Department of Education school, please note that training must also be completed at the school where you volunteer.

Term 1 Volunteer Child Safe Training Sessions

All sessions will be conducted online via Webex. Dates and links can also be found on the Sentral Parent Calendar. Please note these sessions are not recorded, they are presented as live sessions.

·         Week 6: Thursday, 6th March | 5:00 - 5:30 PM (online)

https://eduvic.webex.com/eduvic/j.php?MTID=mef3a2152e87f811c709212cd25375ce6

·         Week 9: Monday, 25th March | 5:00 - 5:30 PM (online)

https://eduvic.webex.com/eduvic/j.php?MTID=m338c73b0471873f39d56a73e6c91506f

We encourage all new volunteers or volunteers needed to update their training to attend one of these sessions to ensure compliance and to continue making a positive impact in our school community.

Thank you for your support in keeping our students safe.

Kind regards,

Adele Brice (On behalf of the WPPS Team)

🌱 LITERACY

This week, we are continuing our mentor texts, War Horse by Michael Morpurgo (Grade 5) and The Silver Donkey by Sonya Hartnett (Grade 6).

In Reading, we are learning about appositives and personification and will continue to focus on comprehension and analysing the text for rich vocabulary.

What you can do at home

Ask your child to share what they have read about in the mentor texts during week. Enable them to read texts of their interests on a daily basis and talk to them about what they’re reading and why.

In Writing, Grade 5s are continuing with narrative. We will use the 'Narrative Arc' to plan our ideas. Students will write with technology and by hand in creating texts, which they will then edit and elevate using the 'call the cops' strategy. We will develop a checklist for students to use to ensure they have included the important elements of narrative writing.

The Grade 6s will use their knowledge of direct speech, adjectives, figurative language and 'Give Me Five' to create modern day fables.

In Spelling, students in Grade 5 will commence their independent word lists, based on their individual results on the SWST. This will continue each week, with new words and a variety of activities to choose from.

Students in Grade 6 are focusing on the suffixes of 'ify' - cause to be eg. beautify,  'ence' and 'ance' - the action of doing eg. confidence and defiance.

🌱 NUMERACY

This week, students will commence Essential Assessments on Number, Algebra and Measurement to highlight areas of focus for each student.

Grade 5 students will continue to investigate NAPLAN questions with explicit teaching; focusing on understanding what the question is asking them to find, recalling the numeracy skills required to solve it and the steps involved.

Grade 6 students will continue to develop their understanding of number properties. They will then be moving onto place value, including decimals, rounding and estimating.

What you can do at home

Discuss the importance of slowing down to understand the problem at hand. It may be the language that gives clues about how to solve the problem or it could be a multi-step problem. This will assist in your child understanding the strategy needed to find an answer.

🌱 CBL

We have explored the roles and responsibilities of the different levels of government and the structure of Parliament. We are now moving into exploring what it means to be an Australian citizen, the process of becoming a citizen and the responsibility that comes with that.

Essential Question:

How and why do people connect to achieve laws in society?

Guiding Questions:

- What does it mean to be a citizen?

- What is democracy in Australia and why is voting in a democracy important?

- What are the roles and responsibilities of the different levels of government and how do they connect?

- How are laws developed and enforced?

🌱 WELLBEING

We are working on helping students to recognise the positive, negative and mixed emotions that we all experience throughout our days.  We will use discussions and activities to explore a variety of scenarios and the feelings that may be associated.

 🌿 REMINDERS

🌱 Please assist your child in ensuring that their iPad comes to school every day, fully charged.

🌱 Please refer to the email communication (12/2/25) in regards to giving permission for allowing connection for your child's iPad to Moysle. This permission must be given before your child can bring their iPad into class.
