Sustainability at SJV

We are back in the garden during our lunchtime break. A special thank you to those parents who helped to keep our garden productive during the Summer weeks…the Damiano, Jepson and Ruska families. Over the next couple of weeks we will be planting some Autumn crops like broccoli and lettuce, broad beans and rocket. Parents are most welcome to join the garden community we already have going. Please let me know if you would like to be involved, there are many many jobs that need to be done to keep things ticking along. The children love spending time in the garden and are encouraged to taste the produce as everything we plant is organically grown. We will have a market stall from time-to-time when there is produce…we only ask for a gold coin donation which goes towards buying more seeds and seedlings for the kids to plant.
A recent sustainability conference held in South West Victoria suggested that we, all of us, take a step toward being more active in the challenges that climate change is presenting. One way they suggested was to take this simple step… “Start - Continue - Stop” That we all START doing one thing differently to what we have been doing to be more sustainable, that we CONTINUE doing the good things we are doing for our environment, and that we STOP one thing that has an adverse effect on our planet. You might see these words around the School, take some time with your families to talk about what you might like to START - CONTINUE - STOP!!
Clean Up Australia: Clean Up Our Schools Day is Friday 28th February. We will hold a Community Clean up which will include our School, the park area opposite school and the footpath. You are welcome to join us for this annual event. Children will be given gloves and bags and encouraged to bring their own tongs.
Lastly, I will have a bin in my classroom for the newish “cash for cans” project. We know that recycling these products is the right thing to do and now we are being rewarded with the 10 cent refund scheme. We would love to collect these cans and bottles, etc and maybe the proceeds can go towards an environment project in the community. Here is a link to the Vic Gov Scheme - Container Deposit Scheme
Finally, our Marine Ambassadors will be chosen this week. Their first adventure will be Thursday 27th February. Stay tuned for the details of the Ambassadors and their actions.
