Celebrating Growth and New Beginnings in Year 5 /6 in 2025!
As the new school year begins, the Year 5 /6 students have taken the time to reflect on 2024 and share their excitement for the year ahead. They have thought about their achievements, memorable moments, and the opportunities that await them in 2025. Here are some of their reflections.
Literacy
This term, our students will be delving into the novel A Ghost in my Suitcase by Gabrielle Wang.
This captivating story follows an Australian girl who travels to China to visit her grandmother, only to uncover an incredible family secret. As she embarks on an unexpected journey filled with mystery and adventure, she also discovers the rich traditions of Chinese mythology and culture. Through this novel, students will not only engage in an exciting narrative but also develop a deeper understanding of cultural heritage, family connections, and the power of courage. We look forward to the discussions, reflections, and creative activities that will emerge from this literary journey. It promises to be a memorable reading experience for all!
Numeracy
Students are building their understanding of data collection, representation, and interpretation. They are gathering data to explore chance experiences, discussing the distribution of outcomes, and learning to report their findings effectively in Mathematics. In the coming weeks, students will be preparing for NAPLAN by engaging in a range of practice activities. They will work through practice questions, explore different question types, and complete past tests to build familiarity and confidence. These sessions will help develop their test-taking skills and reinforce key learning areas.
Inquiry
Students are exploring the unit Ethics and Emotions in Inquiry. This topic focuses on the importance of honesty, making ethical decisions, and understanding how the media can influence our thoughts and choices. Students will also discuss strategies for handling peer pressure and reflect on their own positive traits. Through class discussions and activities, students will develop critical thinking skills and a deeper awareness of the values that guide their decisions. This unit encourages them to make thoughtful choices and recognise the strengths they bring to different situations.
Religious Education
In Religious Education, students are exploring their personal understanding of God and reflecting on what faith means to them. They will be writing prayers and discussing the significance of class prayers. As we prepare for Lent and Easter, students will also be learning about this important time in the Christian calendar. This is a valuable opportunity for reflection, prayer, and personal growth. Students are reflecting on our school theme, Catherine McAuley’s ‘Good Today, Better Tomorrow,’ to deepen their understanding of how small acts of kindness and support can make a difference in the lives of others. By helping those around them, they are also growing into compassionate and thoughtful individuals.
With a year of learning, growth, and new discoveries ahead, 2025 is already off to a great start!
