Social Justice Sunday (25 August)

Truth and Peace

A Gospel Word in a Violent World

Adapted from Pope Francis’ Fratelli Tutti

O God, Trinity of love,

from the profound communion of your divine life,

pour out upon us a torrent of sisterly and brotherly love.

Grant us the love reflected in the actions of Jesus,

in his family of Nazareth,

and in the early Christian community.

Grant that we Christians may live the Gospel,

discovering Christ in each human being,

recognising him crucified

in the sufferings of the abandoned

and forgotten of our world,

and risen in each sister or brother

who makes a new start.

Come, Holy Spirit, show us your beauty,

reflected in all the peoples of the earth,

so that we may discover anew

that all are important and all are necessary,

different faces of the one humanity

that God so loves.

AMEN.

Social Justice Sunday is observed annually on the final Sunday of August. The Catholic Church in Australia has a long tradition of commemorating Social Justice Sunday and has issued an annual Social Justice Statement practically every year since 1940. The social justice statement is made on behalf of the all bishops of Australia. The Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference have released the Social Justice Statement for 2024–25, entitled Truth and Peace: A Gospel Word in a Violent World.

In the foreword to the statement Australian Catholic Bishops Conference President Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB writes ‘Words are never enough to make peace—action is required.’

The statement and words within it help us understand the current situation and how we may work collectively to create a world which better matches both human desire and the divine plan.

It is important to note that ultimately everyone can contribute to peace through actions such as prayer, advocacy and local community engagement. Education can also play a vital role in promoting peace by teaching the values of truth, trust and dialogue, according to the bishops.

Hopefully, the students and community of St Pius X College hear the words of the Social Justice Statement and endeavour to make this world a better place.

College Student Leaders appointed to the following positions for 2025

At this week's 2025 Student Leadership Retreat, the leaders-elect collaborated and appointed leaders to the various portfolios for 2025.  During their time away, Mr Gillogly, Ms Bamber and Mr Maloney facilitated the retreat that focused on the qualities of a good leader and how important it is to work together for the good of all.  With the encouragement of Anthony Parissis (College Captain elect), Lachlan Saber (Vice-Captain elect) and Charlie Woolf (Vice-Captain elect) our leaders navigated through the process in a positive manner and have been appointed to their roles for 2025.

St Pius X Feast Day Holiday

Just a reminder that next Monday, 2 September, we will be celebrating our St Pius X Feast Day with a holiday.  Classes will resume on Tuesday 3 September.

Splinters, Splashes, Sounds, Stage and Stories - tonight

We are eagerly anticipating the HSC showcase, Splinters, Splashes, Sounds, , Stage, and Stories. This event will feature the outstanding major works in an exhibition throughout the College tonight. I encourage all students and families, especially those in Year 11, to attend this incredible evening and celebrate the remarkable talent within our College.

Father's Day Friday 30 August

Awareness of Organ Donation – Wear your favourite jersey

A reminder to all members of our community that on Friday as part of our Father’s Day celebrations we also support Jersey Day.

Each Jersey Day, schools and workplaces across Australia are asked to allow students and employees to wear their favourite sporting jersey to school or work and begin the conversation with their family and friends about the importance of becoming an organ and tissue donor. Jersey Day was inspired by the gift of life that Nathan Gremmo (ex-student of Oakhill College) gave to six people when he became an organ donor at age 13.

Jersey Day is all about raising awareness – there is no requirement to raise funds. Jersey Day is fun, it’s free and by registering to become an organ and tissue donor you could be helping to save a life

Fathers, Grandfathers, etc and their son/s are encouraged to wear their favourite jersey during the Mass and then during school day in support of this very special cause.  Students still must wear full winter uniform in their travel to and from school.

On behalf of the St Pius X community, I would like to wish all fathers, and those who have been like fathers to us, a day filled with joy and love this Father’s Day

Staffing matter

Over the past week, a long-standing staff member has informed me of her intention moving forward.

Mrs Iwatani has accepted a position at another EREA school, St Gabriel’s in Castle Hill, which specialises in supporting students with diverse learning needs. Mrs. Iwatani has been a vital part of the St Pius X community for over two decades, known for her dedication and unwavering commitment to her students. She has positively impacted the lives of hundreds of students during her time here, including many of our current students, and her departure will be deeply felt by everyone who has had the privilege of knowing and working with her. Mrs Iwatani’s last day with us will be Friday, 27 September.

Please join the College community in expressing our heartfelt thanks and best wishes to Mrs Iwatani as she embarks on this new chapter. Her passion for education and dedication to her students will be sorely missed.  May God protect and guide Mrs Iwatani in her new endeavour.

Grand Final week for Football

Congratulations to all football teams for reaching the Grand Finals.  Though we didn’t win all of them, reports back have been very encouraging with all players displaying great sportsmanship and school spirit.

We did have two Premiers, the 2nd XI coached by Mr O'Byrne and the 16B’s coached by Mr Barnes.  Both games were well contested with the 2nd’s winning comfortably and the 16 B’s winning after a penalty shootout.  Thank you and congratulations to all our grand finalists for their efforts throughout the year.

Final round for Rugby

The rugby season finished up at Oxford Falls with a strong performance from all teams.  Congratulations to all teams for a fantastic season especially our First XV who had a 12 – 3 record for the year.

Best wishes to our athletes as they continue their preparation for the first Invitational carnivals this week.

Just as one season concludes, the next begins, with both basketball and cricket commencing their trials.  If you have not signed up, yet, please do so via Clipboard.
