How The World Works

Year 2 - Term 4, 2024

Transdisciplinary Theme

'How the world works'

Central Idea

Forces change the way things move

As an International Baccalaureate world school, authorised to teach the Primary Year’s Programme, we explore six transdisciplinary themes each year.

Our new unit of inquiry, 'How the World Works,' explores the scientific principles of forces and their impact on movement.

During this unit the students will be involved in a number of Science experiments to explore pushes and pulls. Through investigations, students will observe and gather evidence about how these forces act in air, water and on the ground.

Concepts

  • Causation: We will investigate how different forces cause changes in the movement of objects, understanding the cause-and-effect relationships in various scenarios.
  • Function: We will explore the purpose and role of different forces (such as pushes and pulls) in affecting the movement of objects, both in natural environments and through technological innovations.

Lines of Inquiry

  • Forces make things move
  •  The different types of forces
  •  How Forces impact our lives

Action

Action in the PYP is a reflection of the students' engagement with the learning process. It is initiated independently and may manifest in various forms, such as:

  • Bringing in books or artifacts related to the unit of inquiry to share with the class.
  • Creating drawings, posters, or models that represent their understanding of forces.
  • Conducting independent research or experiments at home and presenting findings to peers.

We celebrate students’ independent actions and encourage them to share their initiatives with the class. If you observe your child engaging in related activities at home, please encourage them to bring their work to school to share their insights and discoveries.

Approaches to Learning

  • Thinking Skills: Students will develop their ability to predict outcomes in experiments, hypothesise about different scenarios, and analyse results to deepen their understanding of forces.
  • Social Skills: Emphasis will be placed on adapting to various roles within group activities, working collaboratively to make decisions, and communicating effectively with peers to achieve common goals.

Learner Profile

Whole school focus- Reflective and Communicators

  • Thinker: Students will engage in critical thinking as they explore how different forces impact movement and apply their knowledge to solve problems and conduct experiments
  • Inquirer: As they investigate and gather evidence about forces, students will embody the spirit of inquiry by asking questions, seeking information, and exploring how forces affect their environment.
