News From Mr Smith

Dear School Community Members,

Student Wellbeing – anxiety: Manifold Heights Primary School is committed to maximising the wellbeing of all students. Our commitment to the School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) framework, our engagement in the Respectful Relationships initiative, along with the support of our Chaplain, Cyndee, help harness and maximise the wellbeing of our students. While at a recent conference, I came across a wonderful website, ‘The Parents Website’ (https://theparentswebsite.com.au/). This website has many resources that resonated with me. One of the articles that I would like to share with you is authored by highly acclaimed childhood Psychologist, Andrew Fuller - ‘Depression Proofing your Children’. This article focusses on how we, as parents, can nurture our children’s ability to manage anxiety. The article provides some valuable suggestions and ideas in supporting our children.

Literacy and Numeracy Week: It was fabulous to see Grandparents, VIP’s and visitors at our school yesterday afternoon as part of our Literacy and Numeracy week celebrations. Thank you to our families for promoting and supporting this event. We look forward to our students and staff coming to school tomorrow in their pyjamas with their favourite book.

R U OK Day: Next Thursday (12th September) is R U OK Day. This year’s theme is ‘I am here to hear’. Students are invited to wear a splash of yellow on this day. Yellow symbolises optimism, joy, happiness and friendship. Students at Manifold Heights Primary School will participate in activities that:

  • raise awareness of the support and help available for people who may be struggling
  • provides strategies to reach out to someone struggling
  • help students begin a conversation to connect with someone who may be struggling

I encourage families to teach their children the following ‘R U OK’ conversation:

Step 1: Ask R U OK?

Step 2: Listen attentively (without interjecting)

Step 3: Encourage action (“is there something I can help you with?”)

Step 4: Check in (follow up with the person)

The R U OK website has a wealth of wonderful information that is worth exploring as a family.

Parking at Drop off and Pick Up: The Local Laws officers have recently informed me that some of our parents and guardians are parking illegally at ‘drop off’ and ‘pick up’ times. This includes parking in ‘No Parking’ spaces, vehicles parking in ‘All Accessible’ parking bays without the appropriate permit displayed, parking across driveways and double parking. The Local Laws officers have indicated that infringements will be issued for any vehicles illegally parked.

Thank you for supporting our school and have a great week.
