Today 8 students visited the Quantum Print-a-car competition.

We had to design a car on a program called Tinker CAD. Then we had to print and print it and shape it to a particular criterion. Students could redesign as many times as possible. For example, we started with an avocado shaped car to a Dorito shaped car to a rocket shaped car that we settled on at the end. We also got to paint the car to finish the design.

Whilst at Quantum RHPS students raced against another school’s car which took into account reaction times of the button presser, the timing of the car across the 20m track, and any penalties given against the car design.

The student's cars all did well. There was some excitement when one car lost 2 wheels on one race.

Some of the comments from the students were:

It's really fun, when the car starts there's a loud noise which scared me.

My heart stops when I click the button to release the car.

I loved every single bit of it. The suspense in the air!

I'm happy as I got the quickest reaction time.

Amazing!

I like when all the CO2 comes out when I press the button then release the car.

Results from today are placed together. They are combined with their portfolio marks and the marks for the criteria for the design. Hopefully we will know results within the next fortnight as to whether any sessions will make it through to the finals.

The competition prize is a Flash Forge 3D printer donated by Cubic Technology.
