Prue McCarthy - Living with a Disability and Inclusion

 

Over the past two weeks, Year 5 has had the privilege of being visited by Prue McCarthy.

 

Prue is a facilitator of the ‘Different on the Outside, Same on the Inside’ program, which is a free initiative for primary school-aged children. The program is designed to break down misconceptions and social barriers while promoting awareness and inclusion for individuals with disabilities.

 

Prue was exceptionally engaging, sharing her personal experiences with difference and the challenges associated with living with a disability.

 

Some student responses were:

 

Heidi 5M: "It was fun. It was good to get to know someone with a disability and how their life actually is."

 

Oliver 5M: "It was great to be able to ask questions without offending anybody. It has been great to learn about Prue's life."

 

Arabella 5M: "I loved having Prue visit the school because she has the best personality and the biggest smile on her face."

 

Bo 5B:  “ Prue was so funny and she is kind. She likes herself for being herself and speaks well for someone with her difficulties.” 

 

Mitch 5B: “I liked how she is getting out all the time even though she has cerebral palsy. She doesn't just stay at home on the coach.”

 

Harrison 5B : “ She was really nice and it was interesting learning about her backstory.”

 

Shea 5Y: "she's a lovely person and I admire how she doesn't let her disability stop her."

 

Maci 5Y: "she was very kind and funny. She has done lots of stuff despite her disability."

 

Charlie 5Y: " she has a great sense of humour and is very kind."

 

Zohab Zee Khan – Spoken Word Poet

Zohab Zee Khan captivated Years 5 and 6 with a dynamic and heartfelt performance. His unique blend of slam poetry, rap, harmonica playing, beatboxing, and percussion, combined with student participation and freestyle improvisation, created an unforgettable and modern theatrical experience.

 

Some comments were:

 

Julius 5M: "it was outrageously funny. He was an amazing entertainer."

 

Tully 5M: "he was really cool and fun. I loved how he asked for words and made them into a rap."

 

Finley 5M: "his words made you feel stuff."

 

Carter 5Y: "he knows how to make kids laugh. He is very inspiring."

 

Hope 5Y: "he is very talented. He shows great resilience by never giving up."

 

Zara 5Y: "he was hilariously funny. Whatever he did, he would make something that wasn't the happiest funny."

 

George 5Y: "5 stars . Very very good."

 

Harriet 5Y: " I really like it because he was really funny." 

 

Harry 5Y: " He was decent and he was really good at talking fast. "
