Mad About Science Incursion Ignites Learning in Year 3/4 Students

This week, our Year 3/4 students had a unique learning opportunity when they attended the Mad About Science incursion. This special event enhanced their understanding of this term's Integrated Studies Unit: Forces and Functions.

The incursion was not just a theoretical lesson, but a practical one. It provided an engaging opportunity for students to delve into the world of forces and motion. Throughout the session, the students explored various concepts, including the fundamental principles of forces and Newton's Laws of Motion. They also learned about the nature of forces, such as gravity and friction, and how these forces influence the motion of objects around us.

Most of the incursion involved practical activities that allowed students to apply their newfound knowledge and explore concepts firsthand. From partnering up to complete challenging balance activities to engaging in experiments that demonstrated inertia and the effects of different forces on objects, the students were fully immersed in the world of scientific exploration.

The incursion also featured exciting workshops, where students conducted experiments that showcased the practical applications of scientific principles. From creating forces to exemplify Newton's Third Law of Motion to predicting and testing the effects of air resistance, the workshops provided a comprehensive hands-on experience for our young learners.

Here’s what some of our students had to say about the incursion:

“I honestly think the incursion was great and learned many new laws and new words.” - Isaac, Year 4

“I had lots of fun at the Mad About Science incursion. We learned about Isaac Newton’s 3 laws. We also did some experiments like balancing ten nails on a wooden block (which is harder than you think).” - Ada, Year 4

“I thought it was very fun and interesting experimenting with the gyroscopes - it was very cool.” - Jackson, Year 4

“The science incursion was amazingly spectacular because we were exploring a fantastic topic, forces in action. We learned about inertia and buoyancy and experimented with many flabbergasting objects and how they work. We followed Newton’s footsteps, learning gravity and his laws of science.” - Olvin - Year 4

“My favourite part was when we got to play with the different types of objects and slide the card out so the item would drop down in the cup. I learned a lot and at the same time I had so much fun!” - Georgie, Year 4

We look forward to building upon the enthusiasm and knowledge gained from this incursion as we continue to explore the captivating world of science with our students.
