From the 1/2 Classrooms

This week, our Grade 1 & 2 students joined in the excitement of CBCA (Children’s Book Council of Australia) Book Week! It was a wonderful celebration filled with fun, imagination, and the joy of reading. The school was buzzing with excitement as students jumped into the world of books, exploring stories that took them on incredible adventures.

Here are some of their favourite books.

Costume activities during Book Week are a fun and educational way to celebrate literature, encourage creativity, and engage children in reading. On Wednesday 21st August, students came to school dressed in their favourite book character and raised money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. There were superheros, witches & wizards, crayons, pirates, princesses, fairies and many other amazing costumes. The impressive homemade costumes truly showcased creativity. Well done to all students.

Students wrote about their book week character and drew a picture.

The theme for 2024 is Reading is Magic.

We finished the day with a Costume Parade and each grade was given the chance to parade their costume to the rest of the school. Students couldn’t contain their excitement, and it was great to see the teachers dress up too.

Why do we celebrate Book Week?

  • To discover new worlds through books. Books are like magic doors that transport us to fantastic new worlds.
  • To promote the joy of reading together. Students love to gather and share stories with each other. They enjoy taking turns to read aloud, bringing characters to life with their voices. Reading together not only enhances our understanding of the stories but also makes learning new words fun and engaging.
  • Reading is more than just enjoying stories. It plays a crucial role in helping us grow and learn. It strengthens our brains, expands our vocabulary, and fuels our creativity.
  • To create our own stories. Inspired by the wonderful books we read, students get creative and start making their own stories. Reading can spark creativity and help us express our ideas in exciting and imaginative ways.

Book Week plays a crucial role in nurturing a love of reading and learning, helping to build a strong foundation for lifelong literacy and intellectual growth. Every book is a new adventure waiting to be discovered. We encourage you to read with your child daily. Happy reading!!
