My Body! What I Say Goes!
This week I had the privilege of going into 1MW to discuss how keeping personal space (bubble space) and having a safety network helps us feel physically safe and comfortable at school.
I read sections of a lovely book on this topic by Jayneen Sanders and discussed 2 points: Keeping a bubble space & having a safety network if you ever feel unsafe.
My Safety Network
It was great to see so many students listing more than 5 safe adults as we traced our hands and created our 5 finger safety network!
Body Bubble
It was also great to learn how everyone had different things that they do let, and they don’t let in their bubble (personal space). Some students like high-fives, others hugs, and others fist-bumps but we always have to ask first to be sure! We don’t want to ever ‘pop’ our friends ‘bubble’.
We also discussed the importance of not touching another person before asking, and that some kinds of touching are not allowed or appropriate at school. We spoke about going to the safety network straight away if you have questions or concerns about interactions with another person.
