SUCCESS STORIES

GRACE YANG’S GOLFING SUCCESS IS SET TO CONTINUE INTO 2025

Following on from our story in August, Grace Yang of Year 7 continues to blaze a trail for young people in the sport of golfing.

Grace recently finished the AMOTA (Australian Master of the Amateurs) women’s qualifying event, coming in second place. This means Grace has qualified to play in the Australian Master of the Amateurs to be held at Southern Golf Club from Friday 3 to Monday 6 January 2025.

Grace will be one of the youngest players on the green.

The Australian Master of the Amateurs is an international worldwide competition with players from 23 countries participating. It will be a great experience for her and we wish her all the best for the tournament.

BERTHE MOUCHETTE FRENCH COMPETITION

It is always a proud moment when McKinnon students are prize winners in the prestigious Berthe Mouchette French competition. This competition has been running since 1894.

The prize giving ceremony is quite a grand affair at the St Kilda Town Hall, held in the presence of the French Consul General, the Mayor of Port Phillip and the president of the Alliance Française among others.

Literally thousands of entrants and hundreds of finalists are involved. Finalists entering the stage come from quite an array of Melbourne's private schools and it was exciting to see our own McKinnon students so well represented.

Our three McKinnon laureates are pictured here, giving you a sense of the scale of the ceremony when they walk up...

We extend our congratulations to:

Claude Howard (Year 9), Gwendolyn Thiere (Year 10) (studying at Year 11 VCE level), and Jenny Cheon (Year 12).

A note from Gwendolyn Thiere….

On Tuesday 26 November, the annual Berthe Mouchette Award Ceremony was held. This ceremony is held to celebrate the winners of the competition, and award them with a series of books, gift cards and French food. This year there were 80 winners ranging all the way from Years 3 to 12 with different competitions to take part in including a poetry reciting competition, a written and oral exam and even a drawing competition!

This year the theme was “Les Jeux Olympiques” and the winners stood up on a podium and received medals for their achievements. The evening came to an end by celebrating 130 years of Berthe Mouchette and by announcing the theme of next year: L’amour (love)! The evening was a huge success, and everyone had a nice evening. Merci!
