Education Week

Education week 2024 was another resounding success at Boorowa Central School. The week started with the first screening of ‘Embrace Kids’ on Sunday afternoon and was well attended by local families and some from Murringo and Young. The school then hosted its annual Education Week assembly on Tuesday which showcased student achievement in music, drama, public speaking and Auslan as well as recognising students who consistently display self-confidence, inclusion and empathy to others in line with the 2024 theme ‘Proud to Belong’. Additionally, the highest achieving students in the colouring, writing and art competitions were awarded a certificate of achievement and a gift voucher. Congratulations to all of the students involved in the assembly and those who received awards.

During the assembly, I invited local Stephen Oxley to join me on stage to participate in a brief Q and A. Stephen’s family has had 5 generations educated at Boorowa Central School and at one time, his grandparents owned part of the land that Boorowa Central School is now built. This land is now where the Art room and P and C shed are standing.

Stephen's connection with the school was something I wanted to celebrate with the audience as he is very proud to belong to the Boorowa Central School family and is extremely appreciative of how well the school staff cared for his children during their time here at the school. To thank him for his time, I had the pleasure of presenting Stephen with an outstanding report card – something he had frequently commented about having never received.

Tuesday night was the 2nd screening of ‘Embrace kids’ and I was pleased to see that many secondary students chose to come and watch the documentary and received its many messages about positive body image and ‘loving yourself’. Hopefully the impact of this viewing will remain with them as they traverse the difficulties of adolescence.

The week’s activities continued Wednesday with the Primary Spelling Bee with many students trying their best in front of an enthralled crowd. We then celebrated Grandparents Day on Thursday and welcomed more than 100 grandparents and special friends to the school to enjoy classroom visits, a Book Character Parade and a lunch cooked and prepared by stage 5 Food Technology students. A visit to the school would not be complete without visiting the Book fair in the Library and buying a special book for a grandchild, which many of our guests did. The library looked fabulous thanks to the hard work of Teacher Librarian Mrs Crokett, Mrs Cusack and the staff who assisted.

Lastly on Friday, primary students participated in the Numeracy challenge before the secondary students challenged the staff in soccer, hockey, netball and touch football. Whilst the staff were comprehensively beaten in touch, we were the overall victors having won all 3 of the previous games.

It was a great week all round with many school community members joining us to celebrate Education Week and Boorowa Central School. Thank you for your ongoing support and your faith in the school, it is greatly appreciated.
