Arts and Design Team

Arts and Design MYP

Students across the Arts and Design faculties have been busy inquiring into units that will prepare them for the upcoming exhibition, Techne 2024 – Repurpose

Our Junior School, Senior School and ELC students are also part of this exhibition. The displays will take place in the School Library, Junior School Visual Art Room and the Gallery.

This year, the exhibition is adopting an environmental approach, as displays and artwork have drawn from reused resources to create/mount work. Students have been encouraged to acquire an awareness of the carbon footprint their work may leave.

Our exhibition aims to promote a sense of responsibility and global awareness of the waste by;

  • developing students’ creative art making skills;
  • expressing their thoughts and feelings about the environment around them;
  • developing inquiry-based learning skills around environmental sustainability issues through addressing targeted questions;
  • developing knowledge and understanding about environmental sustainability issues;
  • developing critical and creative thinking skills while considering environmental issues;
  • developing personal and social capability by becoming involved in displaying and discussing artworks and their environmental messages;
  • cultivating environmental ethics individually and among peers.

MYP Performing Arts and Year 5 Performing Arts

Students in Years 5 – 9 have been inquiring into units where their confidence and expressive skills have been the focus. They have been rehearsing scripts and improvisation techniques to develop vocal and movement skills. Commedia dell’Arte, Pantomime and Shakespeare plays have functioned as rich stimulus to ignite students’ creativity and interpretative skills.

Students have worked collaboratively to refine their work, learning how to embrace feedback to strengthen their final performances.

Here are some photos of students rehearsing in their Performing Arts classes.

Junior School Art

It has been an amazing term for artmaking, recycling and repurposing materials for our incredibly talented art students.

Our little Grade Preps learnt about warm and cool colours from the ‘Rainbow’ activity and the element of art, ‘texture.’ They are also learning about Vincent van Gogh and his famous painting ‘Starry Night’.

Students in Year 1 completed a mobile display, collaboratively with recycled cardboard, beads, bells and straw. There was a positive impact of collaborative learning on my classroom's social and intellectual climate with the passing of more control of learning to my students.

Our Year 2 inquisitive learners are being introduced to Cubism and the famous artist Pablo Picasso. They are creating vibrant cubist portraits with oil pastels.

Matisse, king of colour has intrigued our Year 3 learners. They learnt about his biography and saw the artworks he created in a wheelchair! Inspired collage art activities gave expression to their ideas.

The Pop art movement is being explored by our Year 4 students with Andy Warhol, as an inspiration artist. They also learnt about a Brazilian contemporary pop artist, Romero Britto and his unique style.

Year 5 students are gaining confidence and success with the iPad app Brushes Redux. They are learning about British contemporary artist, David Hockney and his iPad creations. Students are also creating collaborative and individual artworks for the ‘Great Barrier Reef’ Project with much enthusiasm.

We are excited about displaying their artworks in the art exhibition, Techne-Repurpose, on 7 November 2024. Please save the date.

Junior School Performing Arts in Full Swing!

Our Junior School students have been actively exploring creativity and expression through various performing arts activities:

  • Prep: Our youngest dancers are taking inspiration from the diverse landscapes and rich culture of Australia. They’re learning to express themselves through movements that reflect the beauty and spirit of our country. From mimicking the waves of the ocean to recreating the movements of native animals, these creative sessions allow students to connect with the world around them.
  • Year 1: Students have been responding to professional dance works, using these as inspiration to generate their own creative movements. By focusing on dance terms such as types of movements, body actions and the elements of dance they’re developing a deeper understanding of how to bring concepts to life through dance.
  • Year 2: The excitement continues as Year 2 students embark on their musical journey with the recorder. They’re mastering simple tunes, starting with classics like “Hot Cross Buns,” as they build skills in rhythm and melody.
  • Year 3: Storytelling is at the heart of our Year 3 drama lessons, where students are using storybooks and Australian themes as the basis for creating original drama works. Through the use of tableaus and imaginative storytelling, they’re discovering the joy of bringing stories to life on stage.
  • Year 4: The art of mime is captivating our Year 4 students as they explore the nuances of silent storytelling. Through planning and performance, they’re learning to convey complex narratives and emotions using only body language, movement, and facial expressions.

Our Junior School Performing Arts program is building a strong foundation in creativity, collaboration, and confidence for all students.

2024 Hellenic Arts Gala

Oakleigh Grammar was thrilled to welcome students from St John’s College Preston for an inspiring collaborative art experience! Together, our students worked on a unique piece that draws on rich Hellenic themes, from ancient mythology to the vibrant colours of Greek culture. The artwork symbolises the unity between our two schools and serves as a beautiful expression of our shared heritage.

Looking ahead, we’re excited about the 2024 Hellenic Arts Gala Evening, scheduled for Wednesday, 4 September. This event will provide an incredible opportunity for students in Years 9-12 to connect with peers from our sister school, St John’s College Preston. The evening will be filled with engaging workshops in Greek Theatre, Greek Dancing, Bouzouki, and Art. It’s a chance to celebrate Hellenic culture while fostering new friendships and deepening community bonds.

We thank all students who have RSVP’d to the event and look forward to a memorable evening of creativity and cultural connection.

VCE Art and Visual Communication Design

On Friday the 23rd of August, the Year 10, 11 VCE Art and Visual Communication Design Students went on an excursion to the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, where students viewed an exhibition called ‘Pharaoh’. Here students learnt about the Egyptian artefacts that were transported from the British Museum in London. We were engaged in a presentation first about the exhibition and how each room is part of the timeline of ancient Egyptian art. Here we saw many artworks ranging from sculptures to paintings and jewellery which the Egyptians wore many years ago. Then we walked to Docklands to have lunch and then we viewed Banksy’s exhibition; ‘Without Limits’. Here are some images from the excursion below:

The year 11 Visual Communication Design students are currently working on their prototypes for their spa model for their first outcome in term 3. Here students had to use many different materials such as cardboard, foam core, paint, paper, cellophane and other materials and methods to test create their final model. Here are some images below of their work in progress:
