Service
Service as Action in Year 6,7 and 8.
The Middle School Service as Action program has been moving in great strives this term. The program developed by our Orthodox Christian values and the spirit of Philotimo, inspired by our patron Saints Cosmas and Damian, strive to instil a sense of compassion and service in our students.
The framework below aims to link out service philosophy, building skills founded in the MYP programme while developing student individual understanding for community needs.
Year 6: Disadvantage and Empathy
Year 6 students have been researching poverty and homelessness. They are working on developing an advocacy campaign and a whole school drive on behalf with our partner Five Loaves Melbourne to provide children and young people with educational and lifestyle resources. Through a charity drive, students will initiate the campaign and pack over 100 backpacks with school supplies for Backpack for Kids. This drive is running from 4 November to 26 November – watch out for more information.

Year 7: Wellbeing
Year 7 students have been working collaboratively to understand and explore how healthy food and lifestyle choices contribute to wellbeing. As part of the Five Loaves Hot Food Truck Program, students have developed healthy menu plans, and will cook and service their meals with staff assistance to the homeless in Term 4.
This service event will be held in late November – watch out for more information.

Year 8: Community, Communication, and Voice
Year 8 students have focused on effective communication through debating this term. Learning to research and advocate for important issues relating to themselves, others, and the environment.
In Term 4, Year 8 students will be holding a ‘Challenge Yourself' fundraising event, in association with Five Loaves to develop key skills in advocacy and the challenges faced in organising fundraising events. Year 8 students aim to create a personal challenge for themselves to be completed in 60 mins. E.g. 100 sit ups, collecting as much rubbish around the school as possible, complete 15 laps of the school etc.
The ‘Challenge yourself’ fundraiser will be on Term 4, Week 4, Friday the 1st of November. Please watch out for more information.
Year9: MYP Community Project
Year 9 students have delved into their taking action phase of their Community Project this term. Learning through active participation in indirect and direct service, students have developed their communication, organisation and self-management skills. Many groups have chosen to fundraise for a chosen charity and have learnt invaluable skills along the way in event planning, cash handling, business management.
Stalls included cupcake and sweets, sausages sizzle, savoury chicken and nuggets. Charities of focus for our student included but not limited to:
- Ronald McDonald House
- One Ball
- Orange Sky Australia
- Breast Cancer Awareness for the Australian Breast Cancer Foundation
- RSPCA and animal welfare
- Save the Children
- Salvos
Students raised over total of $2200 for their charities. WELL DONE!

Well done to our Oakleigh Grammar community for continuing and developing our service culture. The service framework has been delivered by our dedicated Pastoral teachers and staff across the Middle School. We thank them for their service to our students and community.
