The weather this week has caused enormous disruption to families and I hope that everything is returning to normal with not too much damage impacting on you all. It was unfortunate that the storms resulted in so many students needing to be away. For those who were present on Monday, our students were privileged to hear a report to the school from Amelia Van Vliet. Amelia was the recipient of the Marsh Tierney Scholarship, which was presented by Martin Cameron. The scholarship supported Amelia to hike the Kokoda Track in honour of both of the fallen veterans, including her own family members, as well as honouring her father, who died in a plane crash on his way to do the same thing many years ago.
Amelia captured the attention of the whole school with her presentation and the admiration and respect of her peers was apparent as she described her experiences and the resilience required to complete the emotionally and physically gruelling trek.
Congratulations, Amelia. We’re all very proud of you.
Teachers are currently completing the twice-per-term assessments of your children's learning behaviours in time for Parent Teacher Student Conversations, which are held on the last two days of term. These reports should be made available to you at the end of next week and we highlight them as an assessment that, on many occasions, is more important than the academic assessments. Students who demonstrate strong work ethic and high levels of engagement in their learning are likely to be more successful in the long term, which is a much better indicator of their academic success in the future. Please take the time to review the reports when they come out on Compass with your child, and ensure that you are attending the Parent Teacher Student Conversations with your child to discuss progress with their teacher. Whilst we are aware of the disruptions of the teacher shortages earlier in the year, Kurnai College is well placed at the moment and we have regular staff in place to support your child's learning. Our most recent (and last) addition to our teaching staff, Sophie Taylor, has now arrived and is with her classes. Unfortunately, she is not yet able to appear under her own name on Compass, so please don’t be put off if your child’s report or meeting slot is associated with CRT35. Sophie will appear on Compass in Term 4.
It is important that I bring to the attention of our community that we have a child who suffers from airborne anaphylaxis due to a peanut allergy. We ask that our parents and students are careful and do not bring food items containing peanuts to school, as just consuming them nearby can result in a life-threatening incident. I am sure that I can rely on your support in this matter to ensure the safety of our community.
