A Spotlight on Learning

A Spotlight on Learning in the MLC on Springvale Campus

The Middle Learning Centre (MLC) has continued to work hard and has engaged with all learning activities with enthusiasm!

In Reading, students have been focusing on using context clues to infer the meanings of unknown words. They examine the surrounding words for clues, analysing known parts of the word, such as prefixes, suffixes, and base words. Additionally, they have been encouraged to read sentences before and after the unknown word for additional context.

In Writing, students have been learning to write informative texts. They have been focusing on creating sentences that convey factual content clearly and accurately, using their notes to construct these sentences. The use of subheadings has helped students organise their information in a structured manner, while they have also been developing their editing skills, learning to revise their work for clarity and coherence.

In Mathematics, students have been working on recalling multiplication facts through various strategies. They have been exploring how to represent multiplication using equal groups, Additionally, they have been exploring the commutative law by creating matching arrays and expressing these in both repeated addition and vertical multiplication formats.

In Projects, students have been learning about lifecycles. They have been learning to name and describe the stages in the life cycle of an organism and put the stages of the life cycle in the correct order.  A key highlight of this topic was taking care of our very own rabbits (The mother rabbit ‘Righty’ and her three babies; ‘Caramel’, ‘Snowball’ and ‘Oreo’), watching them grow from baby rabbits (also known as kittens) into young adult rabbits.

Additionally, some very enthusiastic and helpful students recently participated in an exciting community consultation hosted by the City of Greater Dandenong to help shape the future of Warner Reserve's Southern Recreation Precinct. They shared valuable ideas about what they enjoy, areas for improvement, and suggestions for new features to make the park even better for everyone. Their input will play a key role in shaping this vibrant community space!
