Year 5/6
Maths
During our last unit on Location and Transformation, students were exposed to a range of skills that included enlarging and reducing two-dimensional shapes, identifying and describing the line of rotational symmetry using two-dimensional shapes, creating grid references using maps, representing familiar locations using grid systems, whilst also plotting points in all 4 quadrants and learning how to use Cartesian Systems.
English
Over the last few weeks we have continued our novel study on Smile. Students used illustrations from the graphic novel to identify a character's feelings and emotions and discussed the repercussions of Raina's (the text's main character) decision to stand up for herself after her interaction with her 'friends'. This interaction allowed the theme ‘be yourself’ to be a focus and enforced the message Raina Telgemeier is trying to teach.
Students have completed a number of Personal Memoir's with their final major piece of writing, being a Personal School Memory.
We have begun to transfer our School Memory Memoirs into our own graphic novel, students are using illustrations and colours aimed at creating a mood with their comic.
Health
This term in 5/6 we commenced our health unit, which links nicely to our wellbeing RRRR curriculum. We have been learning about the changes that begin to occur to our bodies during puberty, and looking at these in more detail. As we know, allowing our students to know more about their bodies can assist with understanding themselves whilst also developing an understanding for others around them.
Remembrance Day
This week we reflected on the sacrifices made by the brave soldiers who fought for our freedom and our country, and as a whole school, we paid our respects to those who served with a minute silence. Lest we forget.
Fire Safety
Moriac PS students were lucky enough to be visited by two volantary fire fighters from the area to talk about fire safety. Students learnt how fires can be started, and what we can do to keep ourselves, others and our safe from accidental fire damage. A few of our students were even lucky enough to use the hose on a real fire truck!
Kinder Bike-A-Thon
Our Grade 5s were fortunate enough to be given the oppotunity to visit the Moriac Kinder for two mornings this week and work with our local kinder students during their Bike-A-Thon. The Grade 5s did an amazing job helping the younger children learn how to ride their bike safely, and use this oppotunity to meet some of the future students of Moriac Primary School.
