The Perfect Blend of Wood and Imagination
This week we are excited to shine a spotlight on an engaging activity that has been sparking creativity, confidence, and problem-solving in our little ones this month, woodworking! When you enter the Hampshire House doors you may have noticed the sound of banging and tapping and have spotted the tiny hammers, nails, and blocks of wood in our Atelier. Woodworking is a valuable addition to our children’s learning. Guided by our Atelerista Chris Cameron our children are learning new practical skills, hammering a nail into a piece of wood, attaching a screw with a screwdriver or clamping and glueing wood pieces together.
Armed with their safety goggles, hammers and vivid imaginations our children have been creating some wonderfully creative pieces, from designing intricate planes and ships, to magical fairy houses and everything in between. Safety of course is a top priority for our woodworking activities. Our children are introduced to tools under close supervision, learning how to use them properly and safely.
Handling tools like hammers and sandpaper strengthens fine motor control and hand-eye coordination. These are essential skills for writing, drawing, and everyday tasks like tying shoes. There is no doubt that learning to use tools safely and effectively takes patience and practice. However, when the children complete a project, their sense of accomplishment helps build self-confidence and resilience. So… when you have that next DIY project to do at home, no doubt your talented preschooler will be very eager to assist you in your task!
