Mrs Kroek & Mrs Scifleet
We are thrilled to introduce our brand new Green Class!
This wonderful class brings together 15 awesome students, wonderful teachers and exciting learning opportunities each week.
Mrs Scifleet will teach Green Class every Monday and Wednesday, while Mrs Kroek will teach the class all day every Tuesday and Thursday and each Wednesday afternoon.
On Fridays, Mrs Wheeler will kick off the morning learning, followed by our fun 'Feel Good Friday' activities in the middle session. To finish the week with energy and teamwork, Miss Grigg will lead the students in Sport and PE every Friday afternoon.
We are also very lucky to have Simone and Faith providing extra support and a helping hand to students throughout the week.
What are we learning in Green Class?
This week, we have been establishing classroom routines, expectations, getting to know each member of our 'classroom family' and getting our room set up to show it is our own.
Students have been busy creating an 'All About Me' display and we can't wait until they are all finished so we can decorate our room with these wonderful creations.
Maths - Number
We started the term looking at ordering numbers and representing whole numbers.
This has included students developing their skills when reading and ordering larger numbers using their knowledge of place value.
Green class students completed many activities to develop their skills including an interactive 'Pop the Balloon' game to work on ordering numbers at various difficulty levels. They created human number lines, helped a friendly alien find his way to a star by leading him through the numbers correctly and completed their own number sort cut and paste activity as well to show their knowledge.
Maths - Data Collection
We have also been learning about the process of data collection including how to collect data, tools to record our data such as tally marks and different types of graphs. Everyone loved thinking of their own questions to ask and collecting their own data.
Literacy
Spelling has started off nicely with students enjoying both the 'on the mat' targeted activity with their teacher and an activity to reinforce their learning with SLSO support. The reinforcement activities include word searches and chalkboard writing linked to the spelling rule, sight word fly swat, stamping spelling themed words in playdough, etc.
We are starting our reading folder section during Literac this week to work on reading confidence, reading stamina and fluency. This will also be encouraged by reading a book of choice from the library as soon as we come back inside after lunch (everyone has been loving his so far, which is wonderful to see).
Everyone in Green Class has enjoyed reading through EPIC Reading website as well because it has a variety of different books to choose from to listen to and/or read. 'Prodigy' is still very popular and we are now using this to reinforce literacy skills as well.
We also encourage regular book borrowing from the library each Monday so students can read at home. Don't forget to pack your books to return and a library bag to pop them in.
We are also starting our look at 'Charlie and The Chocolate Factory' by Roald Dahl this week during our literacy session. This will provide us with lots of inspiration for our writing sessions and give us a great chance to build our vocab and reading comprehension skills.
Visual Arts
Green Class began looking at the elements of art by exploring line. We looked at different types of lines before exploring line through music and painting lines as we listened to the music. We did this by listening to four very different types of songs and watching as our lines became different depending on the mood and the tempo of the music.
We can’t wait to see all the adventures, growth and smiles that Green Class will bring!
