SAKG Winter Wonders: A Season of Harvest, Learning & Gratitude!
As the crisp winter air settles over Kingswood Primary, our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden (SAKG) program continues to thrive, buzzing with activity, learning and the wonderful spirit of our students and community. It's been a season of remarkable effort, bountiful harvests and heart warming teamwork!
A Mandarin Mountain of Success! 🍊
We are absolutely thrilled to announce that our mandarin harvest is complete! Over approximately six weeks, with the enthusiastic help of three dedicated classes, we collectively picked an incredible 40 kilograms of juicy, sweet mandarins! This fantastic effort truly showcased our students' Persisting and Striving for Accuracy as they carefully selected each ripe fruit. It's a testament to their hard work and the generosity of our SAKG garden.
Butterflies, Peas and Winter Resilience
While the colder, wetter weather arrived, it certainly didn't dampen our spirits! Our Year 4 students certainly demonstrated Thinking Flexibly, opting to stay warm indoors and embark on a delightful craft project: creating vibrant yarn butterflies. These beautiful, colourful creations can now be seen fluttering cheerfully from our bare fruit trees in the SAKG garden, adding a touch of whimsical beauty and reminding us of creativity even on chilly days.
Amidst the winter chill, our green thumbs have been busy! We successfully planted some new peas, eagerly anticipating their fresh, sweet pods in the coming months. Our beloved SAKG hens have also been diligently cared for, ensuring they remain happy, healthy and continue to provide us with delicious fresh eggs.
Teamwork Makes the Dream Work!
The Year 5 students have been absolute superstars, demonstrating incredible Thinking Interdependently and Communicating with Clarity and Precision in their garden tasks. They tackled the challenging job of taking off the large fruit tree net. It was a monumental effort that, for a while, seemed like it wasn't going anywhere! However, through their combined strength and perseverance, they finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel as the net began to yield, revealing the satisfying progress they had made.
A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Incredible Volunteers!
No SAKG update would be complete without a moment of profound gratitude for our extraordinary volunteers. Recently, Sonia and I had the immense pleasure of hosting a special volunteer morning tea to express our sincere thanks for their unwavering dedication. We transformed the SAKG kitchen into a delightful setting, serving a lovely high tea complete with delicious savoury and sweet treats – a small token of our appreciation for their invaluable contributions.
Our SAKG program simply cannot run without your incredible help and support! We have genuinely enjoyed having each of you in the kitchen and garden, witnessing your passion and expertise. More importantly, our students have absolutely cherished the opportunity to work alongside you and learn from your wisdom and experience. Your presence enriches their learning journey, fostering a deeper connection to food, nature, and community.
Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for being such an integral part of the Kingswood Primary family!
Happy Holidays and Gardening!
