Hello everyone and well done for getting your children through another term at school. Now it is the time to take a break from some of your routines. However, one routine that should remain throughout the holidays is reading.
It is generally recommended that children continue reading during school holidays to maintain their literacy skills and prevent a decline in reading ability. However, the approach should be relaxed and enjoyable, focusing on fostering a love of reading rather than academic pressure.
Here's why and how to encourage reading during the holidays:
Why it's important:
Prevents learning loss:
Extended breaks from reading can lead to a noticeable drop in reading skills, particularly for younger children.
Maintains momentum:
Consistent reading practice helps children retain and build upon the skills they've developed during the school year.
Promotes a lifelong love of reading:
By making reading an enjoyable experience during holidays, you can cultivate a positive attitude towards books and reading in general.
Expands vocabulary and knowledge:
Reading exposes children to new words, ideas and perspectives, contributing to their overall cognitive development.
How to encourage reading:
Make it fun:
Choose engaging books, visit the library, or let children select their own reading material.
Read aloud:
Reading aloud to children, even older ones, can be a great way to share stories and model good reading habits.
Create a reading space:
Designate a cosy and comfortable area where children can relax and enjoy reading.
Incorporate technology:
Audiobooks and interactive reading apps can be engaging alternatives to traditional books.
Combine reading with other activities:
Visit museums, zoos, or parks and encourage children to read about the places they visit.
Don't make it a chore:
Avoid turning reading into a stressful activity. Keep it relaxed and enjoyable.
Lead by example:
If children see adults reading for pleasure, they are more likely to develop a positive attitude towards reading.
