Class Celebrations

Celebrating the growth in our wonderful children on each learning level...

Prep

Last week our Preps reached a significant milestone, they completed their first 100 days of school! We're incredibly proud of their growth, enthusiasm and achievement across the first 100 days. From mastering their phonics to developing and maintaining wonderful friendships, they're achievements have been nothing short of remarkable. We celebrated with a special dress up day where they transformed into 100-year-olds, completed fun writing activities, and special crafts and even a watched a movie all about the Preps at SMPS! We're excited for the rest of the year and the continued learning and laughter.

Year 1

This week in Maths, our Year 1 students have been learning different strategies to add two digit numbers. These have included using a number tape, a number line, skip counting and place value using tens and ones. We have been really proud of the way they have approached each strategy and it has been a joy seeing them grow!

Year 2

This week in English, our Year 2 students read the book 'The Emperor and the Kite'. The book is about a little girl called Djeow Seow who likes to fly her kite. Unfortunately, she is often over looked by her family. This all changes when her father is captured and Djeow Seow is the brave one that saves him with a kite and rope. After reading the book, our students finished the sentence stem: I am small but mighty because I can... They then crafted their own kites to make an artwork. Read to find out what makes some of our students mighty!

Year 3

The Year 3 students enjoyed a fun-filled Soccer Gala Day at Fawkner Park on Friday, with the rain thankfully holding off until the very end. Students showed excellent teamwork, resilience and budding leadership skills as they organised and supported their teams throughout the day. Their positive attitudes and willingness to give things a go made the event a real success. We are always so proud of the way they represent South Melbourne Primary School when out in our local community.

Year 4

On Friday, the Year 4 students had a great time at the Soccer Gala Day at Fawkner Park. They travelled responsibly on the tram and represented SMPS with pride. The students gave their best effort in every game, displaying determination, teamwork, and skill on the field. Most importantly, they showed excellent sportsmanship, encouraging one another and respecting their opponents throughout the day. It was a fantastic experience that reflected the character and community spirit of SMPS!

Year 5

This term in Humanities, our focus is on migration. We are exploring why people have moved to Australia in the past and why they continue to do so today.

Students were invited to bring in an item that holds special meaning for them and their family. These items reflected cultural traditions or family history, and each one came with its own unique story.

The Year 5 learning space became a showcase of the rich, colourful tapestry that makes up our SMPS community. Students proudly shared their items, offering their classmates a wonderful insight into their heritage, family stories, and traditions.

It was a true celebration of diversity and connection.

Year 6

Last week, our Year 6 students visited Scienceworks for an exciting day of learning and discovery. From exploring the interactive exhibits, like racing Cathy Freeman or experiencing the sensory room, there was so much to spark our curiosity! Students also enjoyed the show in the Lightning Room, where they witnessed powerful bolts of electricity and learned how lightning is formed. It was a day filled with sunshine, laughter, and plenty of “ooohs” and “ahhhhs”. The excursion was a fantastic way to consolidate our learning in our current Science unit, Bright Ideas. Well done, Year 6!
