New Farm Manager

This week we welcomed Johannes Haumann to the College in his new role as Farm Manager. Johannes will introduce himself elsewhere in this Weekly Wrap, but he brings strong skills in agronomy and horticulture that will be a valuable addition to our Farm and the broader College team. I have no doubt that our whole College Community will make him feel welcome and assist him as he transitions into his new role.

I want to publicly acknowledge the efforts of Brad Falkingham, who has filled the role of Farm Manager for the past few months. Brad’s knowledge of dairy and beef, as well as the broader farm, is legendary, and his commitment to the College and our students is commendable. We are lucky to have staff like Brad at the College.

New Drone

This week, Matt Olde and Shaun Lawrence demonstrated the use of the new drone. It was amazing to watch the drone plan its flight path and deliver a simulated spray to the oval.

Our drone can carry up to 50 kg of payload, and we have hoppers for dry materials as well as a tank to hold liquids. There are many opportunities for the use of the drone around the College, such as spraying pesticides and spreading fertilizer, especially at this time of year when the ground is too wet to use tractors.

Mumps

We have been informed that someone in our school community has been diagnosed with mumps. Mumps is a notifiable disease and requires the affected person to be in isolation while recovering. See your doctor if you or your child has symptoms of mumps.

Key facts

  • Mumps is a viral illness that spreads easily from one person to another.
  • It commonly causes fever, tiredness and swelling of the salivary glands.
  • Mumps can cause serious complications and have a lasting effect on your health, such as hearing loss and infertility.
  • Vaccination is the best protection against mumps.
