Hello families of Year 10!
Welcome back to Term 3! This is a term that moves very quickly at just 9 weeks long, but there’s a lot happening in and outside of the classrooms for our students at Year 10 this term!
In English, students are completing work on being able to analyse arguments and have been reading various opinion pieces to look for key language, tone, and phrasing that can make some arguments more persuasive than others. Students are also learning techniques such as annotation in doing this work.
Students in Maths have just begun working through a unit about financial maths and will be looking at some key concepts to support them as young adults who will soon need the skills to do things such as understanding loans and how interest works, and being able to calculate percentages for items on sale to determine if they’re getting good value or not!
The Year 10 Science unit this term is all about physics with a specific focus on forces, motion, and road safety. Students have been completing crash-test practicals in class to investigate how different speeds and forces impact people in a crash. This has also been backed by their excursion to RYDA at Deakin, where students investigated causes behind a real-life crash, investigated the links between speed and stopping distance, and also completed a number of other road safety related workshop.
In Humanities, students are completing a Geography unit with a focus on environmental impacts and wellbeing of various populations across the world. Students investigate things like the impact of fast fashion, the impact of harvesting and using palm oil, and the benefits and disadvantages that tourism brings to countries around the world - and being able to critically assess and understand these impacts.
Other key things happening in our community include our Mentor program which focuses on Respectful Relationships this term and looks deeply into real-world problem solving skills, our scholarship process where students are continuing to test and interview for programs such as Skyline and ABCN, and our HAPE program where students are completing activities such as assessing their dietary habits and trialling out sports like Frisbee Golf.

Farzan Mohammad Aref
We are incredibly proud of Farzana Mohammad Aref, a dedicated student from Northern Bay College, who was honored to represent Australia at the world-renowned US Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama! This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity was made possible by the prestigious Endeavour Scholarship, allowing Farzana to join an exceptional group of students from across the globe for an extraordinary experience. At the Space Camp, she had the chance to train as an astronaut, gaining hands-on experience that included simulated space missions designed to strengthen her problem-solving and communication skills. One of the highlights of her journey was meeting Apollo 16 astronaut Charlie Duke, which left a lasting impression on Farzana. She embraced every challenge with enthusiasm, resilience, and a determination to succeed. Reflecting on the experience, Farzana shared how it pushed her out of her comfort zone, helped her grow in confidence, and underscored the importance of teamwork and perseverance in achieving extraordinary things. Farzana’s story is a shining example of how a deep passion for STEM and strong leadership can take you places you never imagined. We are excited to see where her journey takes her next, and we have no doubt that her future will be filled with even greater achievements!
Mohummed Husseini
A massive congratulations to Mohammed, who has been chosen as one of only 12 students in Victoria to receive the prestigious Premier’s Spirit of Anzac Prize! He will embark on a once-in-a-lifetime study tour to Gallipoli this September – an extraordinary accomplishment that celebrates his leadership, thoughtful reflection, and strong sense of community. Be sure to give him a well-earned congratulations when you see him.
Student Achievement
Teachers have been keeping a keen eye out for students that can be awarded an achievement chronicle for our four school values! Our current Achievements Leaderboard is below.
RMIT Excursion
All VCE students recently enjoyed an engaging and insightful excursion to RMIT University’s city campus. The visit offered a valuable first-hand look at university life while also encouraging students to think about their future career pathways. Throughout the day, students took part in meaningful conversations, sharing their current study goals and career ambitions. These discussions provided the perfect opportunity to ask targeted questions about university experiences, career options, and the many pathways available after completing VCE. The day not only inspired students but also gave them practical guidance, leaving them more confident and informed about their next steps – all while exploring the vibrant Melbourne city campus.
VCE Study Skills Workshops
As our VCE students head into the final stretch of the year, Elevate Education visited our school to deliver their Finishing Line workshop – a timely and practical session designed to equip students with the tools and strategies they need for exam success. The workshop focused on building confidence and maximizing performance during the high-pressure exam period. Students explored:
Elevate’s engaging presenters shared real-life examples and actionable tips, leaving students with a clear plan to approach their studies in the lead-up to exams. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many noting that the session helped them feel more prepared, motivated, and in control.
We wish all our VCE students the very best as they push towards their own finishing line.
Homework Club
On Monday’s, Tuesdays & Thursdays, VCE students rally together in the study space to squeeze in some extra study time with their teachers. Term 2 had a great increase in numbers, and we are already seeing senior students frequenting this space to make the most of their time leading up to their upcoming assessments and exams. Stay tuned for an update on term 3’s homework club attendance!

Cultural lunch
A huge congratulations to our VM/VPC EAL students for their incredible work during the Cultural Luncheon Immersion Experience. Over three days, they delivered full lunches that celebrated their cultures and created powerful opportunities for connection and learning. The objective—to break down the barriers of racism through shared food and experiences—was beautifully achieved. We are so proud of our students for their leadership and courage throughout this project.
VM/VPC ENTERPRISE UPDATES
On Monday 28th July, students from VM/VPC Enterprise were invited to engage in a workshop hosted by Bunnings’ Activity Organiser, Sarah Wilson. These students are part of the Northern Bay Bike Repairs program and spend most of their Mondays developing their bike-maintenance skills. However, today they got the opportunity to develop their woodworking skills by building bike stands. Some students have opted to take them home; whilst other have kindly donated them to the bike shop, where they will be installed to help with bike storage. A big thank-you to Sarah from Bunnings for organising this activity - the students really enjoyed it. – Ben Riley
This group has also been busy updating the NBC Bike Repair website

Work Related Skills - Geelong Gallery Project
Year 11 students visited the Geelong gallery to learn about its history but also what happens in the workplace of the Geelong Gallery. They learnt about the different jobs people do in the Art Gallery, the skills you need to work in an Art Gallery and how the skills needed to work in the Art Gallery are transferable to other jobs. It also supported students to practice their speaking and gain confidence in speaking to people in unfamiliar environments. The final part of the day was a workshop where the students participated in an art activity while learning how they could facilitate their own art activity back at school!
Literacy Inquiry
Our Year 12 VPC students are diving into their Literacy Inquiry on Biodiversity, using microscopes and biology equipment to explore the intricate details of the natural world. Hands-on learning at its best – building both scientific understanding and literacy skills.
Student shout outs
Kayla Baker
Geelong Youth Engagement Kokoda Program - NBC Representative
This September, year 11 student Kayla will be flying over to Papua New Guinea with 13 other secondary school students from around Geelong to complete the Kokoda Track. The rugged trail in the Owen Stanley Ranges in Papua New Guinea was a gruelling battlefield in World War II. Over the 10 days, the students will hike 100 kilometers and reach up to 6,000 meters in elevation. Kayla and the GYE crew have been planning and training for months now. If you see Kayla around, give her some encouragement and we can’t wait to hear about the adventure when she returns.
FRIDAYS - SBAT & SWL DAY
Students in Year 11 & 12 are out at their respective job sites each Friday. From childcare to plumbing, fashion, auto and everything in between! We have received positive feedback from all our employers and we have even had students be offered apprenticeships and part time jobs from these experiences!
FRIDAYS - Preparing for SWL DAY
If students are still looking for SWL placement, in between placements or still need time to work on their employability skills, you may see this motivated bunch working on the many projects required to keep the school up and running! Providing valuable opportunities to practice teamwork and initiative and also get to be taught specific trade and industry skills.
