Business Services
Year 11 Business Services students have begun the year learning about ergonomic work practices and business basics. They are quickly becoming spreadsheet specialists, learning all about software applications and the best choice of application to use for a variety of audiences and methods of communication.
After the success of their pop-up shop ‘Preloved Perfection’ at the end of last year; where students raised $300 for Vinnies Christmas hampers, Year 12 students have been steadily working through their HSC mandatory topics, recently focusing on sustainability and innovation. Students are now preparing for their second work placement, which will take place in Week 2, Term 2.
Construction
Year 11 students have finished their introductory projects of the Mallat and Concrete float using a wide range of hand and power tools, marking out and finishing techniques. More complex use of the drop and circular saws are now being learnt with the manufacture of a saw horse and timber case.
Year 12 students have completed the dog kennels, levelling and site setout projects. They are now preparing to concrete, starting with mix and reo variation test samples before working towards pouring another slab at the Agriculture Plot.
Hospitality
Year 11 Hospitality students have been learning about hygiene and work health and safety in the kitchen. Students have had the opportunity to apply what they have learnt into a practical setting by working in teams making a range of sweet treats. They have tried on their Hospitality uniform and are looking forward to wearing it for their assessment practical tasks later in the term. They will begin their industry work placement with Pear Tree Cafe at the beginning of next term, which will build their confidence and understanding of industry requirements.
Year 12 students completed their Non Alcoholic Beverages module at the end of last year. They demonstrated their practical component by making and serving a range of Mocktails to College Staff. Students are now focusing on preparing and serving espresso coffee, they had the opportunity to practice serving these beverages at the College Open Night as well as sweet and gluten free treats.
Manufacturing and Engineering
Year 11 students have commenced their course using the Pad Saw. This project allows students to refine their skills and knowledge in precision marking out, the care and correct use of a range of hand tools and finishing techniques. Our next task will require students to create a money box using a variety of welding techniques.
Students in Year 12 have been developing a new machining project. Students have utilised research, design, manufacturing techniques and material procurement to create a soft hammer which will have a range of interchangeable heads made from nylon, brass and aluminium. Precision measurement and precise use of lathes and milling machine techniques will be required for this project.
