The start of Term 1 has been a busy one for our grade 5 students and teachers. It has been wonderful to see all our students back and eager to learn. We appreciate the support from families and are looking forward to working with the students in Grade 5 at Aitken Hill Primary School.

Students have been developing their multiplicative thinking. Multiplicative thinking refers to understanding and using multiplication as a mathematical operation. It involves grasping the concept of multiplication, recognising its applications, and solving problems using multiplication strategies. Students are transitioning from concrete models to abstract thinking. Students are developing the ability to solve more complex problems involving multiplication and applying it to real-world situations. Students are recognising the connection of multiplication as a shortcut for repeated addition and to share quantities. Multiplicative thinking involves reasoning about the numbers and making connections to patterns in numerical relationships. Students have focused on using arrays and identifying fact families. They are exploring strategies to solve mathematical problems the most efficient way. It is important that students develop a variety of strategies and skills to show their thinking.

Teachers have encouraged students to participate in the numeracy games, the activities and the online assessment as having different elements will help them to develop into good mathematical thinkers. A well-rounded approach to numeracy with a combination of hands-on activities, visual aids, games, and real-life applications will enhance student learning and contribute to developing their knowledge in addition and subtraction strategies and skills. Teachers will encourage and scaffold student learning with positive reinforcement and a supportive learning environment.

Inquiry:  Term 1 History -

In term 1 students investigated the unit and explored the question “We can better understand who we are by learning about the events and people who shaped our country.” Students examined colonial Australia in the 1800s, including the expansion of the British colonies and why they developed. They used a range of resources and developed a historical narrative which included an understanding of chronological sequencing of events, analysing sources, and use of historical terms. Students have researched “What did an Australian Colony develop after the 1800s?”
