Visual Arts

Carly & Steph

Hello from the Visual Arts team!

This month, students continue exploring the fundamentals of art and drawing, with a strong focus on The Art Elements including: line, shape, colour and value. Weeks 1-5 was based primarily around line and shape and weeks 6-9 was based around colour and value.

Foundation

The Foundation/Prep Communities are currently working on identifying and naming all the colours of the rainbow and how these can relate to feelings such as happiness, anger, sadness and fear. So far they have been colouring in beautiful rainbows and learning all about "ROY-G-BIV" (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet). They have also read the story "The Dot" and tuned a colourful dot into a beautiful piece of artwork by using concentric circles in oil pastels, heavily inspired by Kandinsky Circles.

Grades 1-2

The Grade 1 and 2 Communities are bringing together their knowledge and skills of line and shape to create a colourful piece using geometric shapes. They are further developing skills in tracing circles and ruling lines for triangles, squares and rectangles, and looking at how contrasting colours work side by side.

Grades 3-4

The Grade 3 and 4 Communities are learning about primary and secondary colours and in particular, how colour value can be manipulated in art by shading darker or lighter to bring a shape to life, creating a layered effect. They are experimenting with colour contrast in objects placed side by side and applying colour on colour, light against dark colours. Their use of geometric shapes and mixed media draws together all the knowledge and skills they developed across weeks 1-5.

Grades 5-6

The Grade 5 and 6 Communities are also working on colour value and up-skilling in their shading techniques. They are exploring contrast, such as warm and cool; opaque and transparent, dark on light, bright on dull within their geometric shapes task. Their use of geometric shapes and mixed media draws together all the knowledge and skills they developed across weeks 1-5.

Thank you for joining us on this artistic journey so far, we look forward to sharing more work with you in Term 2.
