Teacher Professional Development Term 1 2024
Teacher Professional Development Term 1 2024
As many are aware, teachers spend a great deal of time engaging in Professional Development (PD) each year. Schools select PD based on school needs, legal requirements, and to ensure our students receive recognised best practice education. It also ensures our students are receiving an education that is differentiated accordingly and meets their needs.
Everybody knows that every 4 year old is not the same as every other 4 year old, and just because you are in Year 5 doesn’t mean you are the same as the rest of the other Year 5s. Because of this, the learning delivered must be considerate of where each child sits at different points in time. That is why multi-age classrooms and schools are able to cater to the academic as well as the social and emotional needs of children so well. https://pvs.wa.edu.au/life-at-pvs/academic/multi-age-learning/
Over the years we have had hundreds of hours of rigorous training to support the delivery of excellent multi-age learning. We are continuously engaging in mathematics, spelling, reading, writing, inclusive education, and giftedness PD. On top of that, we also complete PD that supports our interests such as cultural training, or anything pertinent to the current needs of our students. This training ensures we can deliver to our students the learning they need at any point in time.
Talk for Writing
During our PD days in January this year, we were lucky to have again been able to secure a Talk for Writing facilitator, this time to deliver the Non-Fiction training. The training is designed to train teachers to be able to help children speak the language of non-fiction in a fun and engaging way before they attempt to write.
As I am sure you are aware, we have now successfully implemented Talk for Writing in each classroom across the school. Over the past few years, all staff have received extensive training in how to teach the fiction program, with some teachers also training in the Poetry modules.
At Pioneer Village School we are committed to investing in upskilling staff in Pie Corbett’s Talk for Writing as it has the potential to dramatically improve students' writing. The approach also offers students with learning and language difficulties an opportunity to develop stronger writing skills.
