Music
Halfway through the term, and we already have some impressive sounds coming from our Beginning Band students!
They will share their progress with family and friends at the Beginning Band/SingIT concert on March 27th, in the PAC. This event will be followed by a welcome BBQ for all Year 7 Ensemble program families. Please RSVP with dietary requirements to emma.moffatt@education.vic.gov.au by March 20th.
It’s not too late – if you would like to learn an instrument, see Ms Humphrey in the band room, and pick up an enrolment form for the instrument of your choice.
Music Support group held their first meeting for 2024 last Thursday and are now seeking helpers for the Year 7 music concert BBQ. If you can help out turning sausages, please let us know!
On March 7th, students participated in the Soulsonics program, finding sound in the BHS environemnt, and editing them to make beats using Abelton software. Students produced some epic beats, really impressing the workshop presenter.
Oboe Masterclass
Several of our Oboe students attended an Oboe masterclass hosted by the Geelong College last Thursday, worked with a professional Oboist, and networked with Oboe students from across Geelong. Many thanks to Emma Moffatt for jumping on this opportunity for our students!
BHS Open Night
Band Captains and senior music students talked up a storm about our music program at last Tuesday’s school open night, and followed this up with a fantastic Jazz Syndicate performance for the largest crowd they’ve ever played for! This was their first gig for 2024, with new line up, so well done to all on such a stellar performance.
GemFest
On Wednesday Beginning Band, Intermediate Jazz and Vocal trio Abigail, Grace and Rose, performed to a large and appreciative crowd at the inaugural GEMFest, hosted by Mathew Flinders Girls’ Secondary college. GEMFest is a new initiative, celebrating state school music from across our region, and BHS represented our school in style, with polished and enthusiastic performances from every student. A massive thank you to Emma Moffatt, for her tireless encouragement and support of our junior groups, and for the energy she put in to helping this new festival get off the ground!
Our newly formed BHS Brass Ensemble are excited to be performing as part of the Portarlington Brass Band Series on March 24th. There will be two performances, starting at 11am and 1pm. Come on down to Portarlington and support our students– make a day of it and bring a picnic!!
