Next week we will be recognising two important days in the Catholic calendar — Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday.
Shrove Tuesday is traditionally a day of preparation before the season of Lent begins. Historically, families used up rich ingredients such as eggs, milk and sugar before the more reflective and simple period of Lent, which is why pancakes have become a well-known tradition on this day. At school, students will have the opportunity to enjoy pancakes and we invite families to send a gold coin donation if they are able. All donations will go to Caritas Australia.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a significant time in the Catholic Church that lasts for 40 days leading up to Easter. Lent is a season focused on reflection, kindness, prayer and helping others. On Wednesday we will hold a whole-school prayer service, during which students and staff will receive a small cross of ashes on their forehead. This symbol reminds us to think about our actions, show compassion to others and strive to be the best version of ourselves.
You may also notice that prayer cloths around the school will change to purple, reflecting this important season in the Church’s year. Purple is the colour of Lent and represents reflection, preparation and renewal as we journey toward Easter.
These celebrations provide a meaningful opportunity for our students to learn about faith, generosity and reflection within our school community.
