Year 1/2

Students have made a wonderful start to the year through our Start Right program. They have been learning and practising important classroom routines such as lining up, using whiteboards and showing our school values in all areas of the school grounds. We have been incredibly impressed with their positive attitudes, enthusiasm, and respectful behaviour as they settle into the new school year.
Mathematics
In Maths, students have been very busy learning to use their new grid books and whilst exploring data. Students have been learning how to collect information using tally marks and represent it through picture graphs, column graphs and tables, as well as interpret what the data shows.
As the term progresses, we will move into the topics of place value, followed by addition and subtraction, which will round out our Mathematics focus for the term.
Reading and Knowledge Building
Our phonics groups are now underway, with students practising letter–sound relationships to support their spelling skills and reading development. We have also begun our Knowledge Building unit on inventions, sparking curiosity and rich discussion.
Continuing with the inventor theme, later on in the term students will read The Imagineer by Christopher Cheng and complete a unit on early explorers and settlers in Australia, building connections across reading, writing, and knowledge learning throughout the term.
ICT and PBL
Year 1s have begun their PBL program, whilst Year 2s have embraced the use of Chromebooks in ICT.
During PBL sessions, students learn to work successfully in rotations, focusing on sharing, taking turns, and following expectations. This term they will be participating in tinkering and invention stations to complement our knowledge-building unit.
Within ICT sessions students will learn important digital skills, including logging in and out of computers using passwords, practising typing skills, and being introduced to a range of commonly used programs.
Library
Library borrowing has now begun, and students are enjoying re-familiarising themselves with the library space and routines. Parents are very welcome to assist during library sessions. Please contact your child’s teacher for more information.
