Mrs Rachel Galvin

WELCOME BACK 

 

The Pathways space has made a flying start to the new year with many students already seeking work experience, commencing their TVET course or School-Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship and many year 12’s already asking about university pathways. The careers room (BPE) will be open each Wednesday at recess for any student in year 9-12 wanting to access the university or TAFE guides, work on their resumes and applications or to chat about anything careers.

CONGRATULATIONS to Sneha Binu for her selection into the University of Newcastle’s High Performing Students Pathway Program. She will complete studies in Globalisation and International Management while continuing to work towards her HSC. 

 

 

EXTERNALLY DELIVERED VET COURSES 

 

TAFE courses start next week (week 4). Any student who is engaging in a TAFE-delivered course should have received a welcome email from their teacher outlining the arrangements for their course delivery. If you have not had contact from your teacher please email Mrs Galvin (email address below). 

 

SCHOOL-BASED APPRENTICESHIPS AND TRAINEESHIPS 

 

The start of the new school year marks a new cohort of students who are commencing their SBAT journey. A SBAT combines traditional schooling with on the job experience and vocational training and is a fantastic opportunity for students to begin working towards their chosen pathway.

Toby Townsend

Toby is beginning his traineeship at Martin’s Gully Public School as an educational assistant. He will work 1 day per week and complete a Certificate 3 in School Based Education Support all while aiming for his HSC in 2027! Toby is already loving his time in the classroom and hopes to pursue a future in teaching.

Archie Cooper

Archie signed his training contract last week and will work as a farm hand at a local property while working towards his Certificate 2 in Agriculture. Archie has had a long standing interest in Agriculture and Primary Industries and hopes to pursue this after leaving school. 

 

 

UNIVERSITY

 

Many of our year 12 students have already expressed interest in the processes surrounding university applications for 2027! While it is early in the year, some institutions have begun releasing information for their 2027 intake. The OCC University Pathways Site will be a central place for students and parents to access information specific to the current cohort and will be updated regularly.

UPCOMING EVENTS

 

On the 23rd of February, The University Roadshow will visit O’Connor. The roadshow comprises representatives from UNE, Newcastle, Southern Cross and Charles Sturt Universities and will be visited by all senior students during Period 4. 

 

The Roadshow will remain at O’Connor for our Stage 6 commencement evening where parents are invited to a meet and greet with Stage 6 teachers, University and TAFE representatives and career support agencies. Year 11 families will access an Assessment Information talk from Mr Chapman and Year 12 families can attend a session with Mr Gibney and Mrs Galvin about the University Admission Centre and preparing for the HSC. Please join us from 5:30 for this event in the College Linkway.
