Visual Art News
The amazing Frida Kahlo was the focus of our Art History explorations in Visual Art this week.
It was very pleasing to find that lots of students knew many trivia facts about Frida’s life, even before we started. Frida was born in 1907 in Mexico and we learned that Frida contracted Polio in her childhood, which caused her to have problems walking. Frida was a brave and determined young woman who shunned fashion and beauty conventions, sometimes dressing in men’s suits, or whatever she felt like wearing on any given day. She suffered a terrible bus crash when she was only eighteen years old and was forced to stay in a hospital bed, wearing a full body cast. Despite this, Frida had an adapted easel brought in and painted whilst she was lying down. After marrying the famous Mexican artist, Diego Riveira, she moved to San Francisco and spent a lot of time in her husband’s shadow, but she persisted in her artistic endeavours and eventually gained notoriety as an artist for her unusual and thought-provoking subjects. I would encourage you to read further and discover more facts about this very determined, brave and incredible artist.
