Medieval Day
The Western Wolves Bring Medieval Magic to Wedderburn College
On Thursday, May 23, 2024, Wedderburn College had the extraordinary pleasure of hosting "The Western Wolves," a renowned Buhurt team, for an immersive day of historical exploration and thrilling combat. Buhurt, also known as Historical Medieval Battles (HMB) or Armoured Combat, is a full-contact fighting sport where participants wield steel blunt weapons, replicating the fierce tournaments of the Middle Ages.
The day was packed with activities designed to introduce students to the rich traditions and excitement of medieval life. Students from various year levels eagerly participated in hands-on sessions, learning not only about the sport of Buhurt but also about the different aspects of medieval life, including the intricacies of armoured combat. The enthusiasm was palpable as students asked countless questions, eager to deepen their understanding and experience the medieval era firsthand.
A highlight of the day was the medieval-themed lunch, featuring delicious pulled beef and chicken rolls, generously offered with optional gravy. To complement the meal, students enjoyed a refreshing medieval-inspired juice, adding an authentic touch to the feast.
The grand finale of the day took place on the primary oval, where the entire school gathered to witness a spectacular armoured battle. Members of the Western Wolves donned their impressive steel armour and clashed in a fierce demonstration of skill and strength. The excitement reached its peak when Mr. Forrest and Mr. Lockhart each selected a champion to represent the houses of Jacka and Ansett in a special duel for school supremacy. The battle was intense, and cheers erupted when the champion of Jacka emerged victorious. Despite this win, Mr. Lockhart was quick to remind everyone that Ansett has triumphed in all other events throughout the year.
The visit from the Western Wolves was a resounding success, leaving students and staff alike buzzing with excitement and newfound appreciation for medieval history. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the team for providing such an unforgettable experience and eagerly anticipate their return for future presentations.
