Combined Bands Day

Last Thursday we hosted the annual Combined Bands Festival, with over 200 students and staff attending from 7 schools across the region. Sean Rankin, a distinguished conductor and performer, worked with the students to prepare two massed items for the finale concert. It was a terrific chance for students from smaller programs to experience playing in a large ensemble and to make friends with peers from other schools. Many thanks to parents Melanie Chandler, Robyn Hodge, Christopher McAvaney, Caroline and Jason O’Keife for their help with packing away equipment, BBQ cooking and serving, and to Jo Tyson for providing sweet treats for students. This day is a huge undertaking to organise, and we especially thank Amanda Linton for the enormous amount of work she put in to make this day such a well organised success, and to Emma Moffatt for all her support behind the scenes.

Bunnings BBQ

Last Sunday our amazing Music Support group held their annual Bunnings BBQ to raise funds for our music program. The roster was full, and they were still selling sausages up until 4pm closing! A huge thank you to Robyn Hodge for coordinating the helper roster, to Jacinta Lodge for taking care of the finances for us, and to all the parents who gave their time to contribute to the music program, it was a great community effort!

Multicultural Day

On Tuesday music students contributed to the festive atmosphere at Multicultural Day, many performing songs in their first languages to entertain the crowds enjoying the delicious foods on offer. Many thanks to Sophie and Bella Ng, Althea Golimlim, Chris McKenzie, Declan Chandler, Liam Biro, and all the students in SingIt for their fabulous performances!

Tunes on Thursday

We heard from our jazz bands last week, and this week it was the Year 7 Rock Band’s turn to take the stage outside the PAC and entertain the canteen crowd with ‘Smells like Teen Spirit’ and ‘Seven Nation Army’. This band is sounding great! Special thanks to Imogen who carried most of the gear back to the band room after the performance – a true muso!

In the week of June 3-7th, instrumental music students learning in the Ensemble program will complete their Solo Performance CATs. They will complete a short assessment, which will replace their lesson for that week. Times will be visible on Compass. The public performance component of the CAT will be on Wednesday or Thursday evening of that week and will appear as an event on Compass for parents to provide consent. This CAT is an important component of our performance curriculum, where students have the opportunity to develop confidence and resilience in a supportive environment. We are really looking forward to hearing students show their talents!

Last Sunday, Ex student Jem Duff and his Band ‘Meta4’ performed at the Barwon Club, supported by two up and coming bands. Both  these young bands had BHS students in them: Charlie Wegman of 9E, and Jaida Cunningham, currently completing Year 2 VET at BHS. It was great to see our past, current and future VET Music students putting their music industry skills into practice at our favourite venue!

Vet Year 1 and 2 students will be performing at Geelong’s iconic Barwon Club on Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th June from 6pm. Come along and hear the future of live music!

Year 2: Monday 24th

Year 1: Tuesday 25th
