The College Pastoral Program works in conjunction with the Resilience Project in the delivery of weekly lessons based on the GEM principles of Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness. However, the College’s Wellbeing team supplements this with their own presentations and inclusion of guest speakers. This year we have seen a number of guest speakers speak to all year levels, below are some details of recent presentations.
Year 7 - Senior Constable Adam Taylor - NSW Police
Last Tuesday senior Constable Adam Taylor came to the College to speak about online safety. This is a vital aspect of community safety and is increasingly becoming the number one concern for young people and their families. Adam spoke about the importance of keeping personal information safe and secure online and how students can protect themselves from online threats. He also explained the implications legal ramifications of things such as sharing images online and sending abusive or threating messages through social media channels.
Year 7 were thoroughly engaged and we thank Constable Adam for the informative talk.
Year 11 - Amy Lloyd - Headspace Miranda
Also last Tuesday Year 11 heard a presentation from Amy Lloyd from Headspace Miranda on mental health and respectful relationships. Amy outlined what Headspace offers and how they aim to help young people with their mental health as well as some key take home tips for maintaining good mental health. Most of the presentation was dedicated to respectful relationships of all kinds. Amy provided information about what healthy relationships look like and what unhealthy, toxic or coercive relationships look like. She also spent time discussing consent and changes to NSW law regarding what consent is and what it looks like in reality. The presentation was creative and informative and we thank Amy for speaking to us.
Year 12 - Jonathan Dallimore - History Teachers Association
On Thursday the Year 12 Modern History Classes hosted Jonathon Dallimore who is currently the executive officer for the HTANSW. Jonathan provided a lecture and study session focusing on the Modern History core topic - Power and Authority. He provided students with valuable information, examination techniques and advice for getting the most out of their written responses. Jonathan also stayed to provide advice to our Extension History students on their upcoming exams and major work. We thank Jonathan for his expertise and insightful presentation.
Years 11 and 12 - Paul Dillon - Drug and Alcohol Awareness
Next Tuesday the College will host Paul Dillon who will speak to Years 11 and 12 about alcohol and drug awareness/safety. Paul has been working in the area of drug education for almost 30 years and as an ex-school teacher, he has an interest in working with young people, and regularly provides drug information sessions and workshops to students across the country. In past years students continue to recount Paul’s valuable lessons and put into practice many of his tips for looking after themselves and friends. We look forward to seeing Paul again at our College next week.
